Mother and Baby Resources

Maternal Home

The Maternal Home program supports patients with pregnancies classified as “high risk” by providing them with additional services, attention, and care during their pregnancy and the postpartum period. Patients in the program have access to medical care, specialty care, mental health support, parenting support, and further resources to help address socioeconomic challenges. The Maternal Home program is offered systemwide.

Cardio-Obstetric Practice, NYC Health + Hospitals/King County

The Cardio-Obstetric practice works with patients at all stages of pregnancy, including up to a year after delivery, to target their heart disease. The program also targets risk factors of heart disease such as hypertension, obesity, and diabetes. The care team – including obstetricians, cardiologists, anesthesiologists, nurses, emergency department physicians, other specialists, as well as non-clinical staff in pediatrics and the emergency department – take a patient centered approach to address heart disease and help lower maternal morbidity and mortality rates. Currently, the Cardio-Obstetric program is offered at NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County.

3-2-1 Impact

The Integrated Model for Parents and Children Together is a two generational approach to support the health and wellbeing of young children and their families. This program, which is currently available to all pregnant patients and pediatrics patients under the age of four, elevates a personalized approach to clinical care with routine screenings conducted by their provider to help identify when a family needs additional support interventions, such as mental health support and non-medical social needs like food or income support. 3-2-1 Impact also includes programs that recognize the essential role of parents in their child’s development and offers an array of tools and resources to support effective approaches to parenting, and integrates reading, parent-child bonding, and learning into family life. Currently, 3-2-1 Impact is offered at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, Queens, and NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health, Gouverneur.

Safe Sleep Practices

All NYC Health + Hospitals facilities promote safe sleep practices for new mothers and families with infants.

Safe Sleep practices help reduce the chances of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). In order to create a safe sleep environment:

What to do

  • Supervised skin-to-skin contact is recommended for all mothers and infants right after birth and should be done for at least an hour (as soon as mother is medically stable, awake, and able to respond to her newborn). Once mother starts to get sleepy, return baby to bassinet.
  • Always place a baby on his or her back to sleep for naps and at night to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
  • Keep your baby’s sleep area in the same room where you sleep (for the baby’s first year). Although your baby should be sleeping in the same room as you, they should not be sharing the same bed as you. Always place the baby in a safety-approved crib, bassinet, or portable crib for sleep.
  • Use a firm sleep surface covered by a fitted sheet; a crib, bassinet, portable crib, or play yard that meets the safety standards of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is recommended.
  • If able, breastfeed your baby.
  • Follow your health care provider’s guidance on vaccinations and regular health checkups for your baby.

What not to do

  • Your baby should not sleep in an adult bed, on a couch, or on a chair alone, with you, or with anyone else.
  • Sitting devices like bouncy seats, swings, infant carriers, or strollers should not be used for routine sleep.
  • Keep soft objects such as pillows, blankets, toys, and bumpers out of your baby’s sleep area.
  • Do not use wedges and positioners.
  • Do not smoke during pregnancy or allow smoking around your baby.
  • Do not let your baby get too hot during sleep.
