Ambulatory Care
Ambulatory care refers to medical services that patients receive in an outpatient setting at the hospital or other medical office location that does not require hospital admission or overnight stay. At NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health, our board-certified physicians and support staff provide ambulatory care services in a variety of areas, including:
Wellness
Our wellness services include all preventative care provided in our doctors’ offices or other ambulatory care settings. This includes gynecological health and women’s care, nutrition, mental health, weight management, and other primary care offerings.
Diagnosis
Many ambulatory care services help us diagnose illness so that we may provide the highest level of patient care possible. Services including blood tests, biopsies, colonoscopies, CT scans, endoscopies, mammograms, MRIs, ultrasounds, and x-rays are provided in outpatient settings. These minimally invasive screenings and imaging procedures are important and having them done in an ambulatory setting can make the experience less stressful for patients.
Treatment
Many medical procedures and treatments do not require a hospital stay and can be done in an ambulatory setting. Examples include chemotherapy, radiation treatment, substance abuse treatment, dialysis, and minor surgical procedures, including same-day surgery. South Brooklyn Health has one of the finest ambulatory surgery facilities in the New York City metropolitan area.
Our board-certified, highly skilled surgeons and experienced clinical staff provide comprehensive, expert care and innovative treatments in our ambulatory surgery center. The center includes modern, comfortable registration and preoperative testing areas and is equipped with a state-of-the-art ambulatory surgery recovery suite. Elements of the preoperative experience can include lab tests, electrocardiogram, chest x-ray, pre-anesthesia assessment, and nurse assessment.
Two examples of the types of treatment that are done in our ambulatory care center include arthroscopy, a minimally invasive procedure that enables doctors to treat joint problems, and laparoscopy, a minimally invasive procedure in which doctors can view organs inside the abdomen. These procedures prevent the need for surgeons to make large incisions, reducing the chance of infection, and lessening pain and recovery time for patients. Other examples of ambulatory surgeries include fixing fractures, repairing superficial wounds, conducting aspirations and injections, performing cataract surgery, and removing damaged tissue or debridement.
Rehabilitation
At NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health, our ambulatory care services also include rehabilitation medicine. Our board-certified physician and team of rehabilitation specialists provide post-operative care, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech and language services, and rehabilitation assistance for a wide range of communication disorders.
