Transitional year at NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health serves as a prerequisite year to prepare for a specialty-specific training in Radiology, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Neurology, PM&R, Preventive Medicine or Anesthesia. Some interns may decide to enter residency training in Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Psychiatry or Pediatrics. The internship provides a year of maturation and transition from application of pre-doctoral knowledge to clinical decision-making and skills.
NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health offers six intern positions and participates in the ACGME match (NRMP) annually. The Transitional Year program functions in coordination with ACGME- accredited programs in Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine and OBGYN sponsored by South Brooklyn Health Hospital, also Pediatrics and Surgical programs sponsored by SUNY-Downstate Medical Center. The TY program has been established in 2010 and is fully accredited by ACGME. Program Faculty is very familiar with all TY requirements, has extensive experience in teaching transitional interns, and provides research opportunities according to interns’ interests.
Exposure to core disciplines is essential for all physicians, whether the ultimate training goal is to practice as a generalist or a specialist. In addition, we promote primary care exposure as a basis for eventual continued study in any specialty.
The core disciplines include Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine. Family Practice rotation is substituted by a Continuity clinic in Primary Care. The program provides at least two months of electives that are chosen by the interns. Among electives are Pathology, Radiology, PM&R and Anesthesia, as well as majority of Medical and Surgical sub-specialties.
The minimum period of service for the completion of the internship is 52 weeks.
