Maggie Tetrokalashvili, MD, FACOG, FACS
Chairperson
Dr. Tetrokalashvili graduated at the top of her class in 1997 at the I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy in Russia and the same year came to New York University Medical School, department of obstetrics and gynecology, for a research fellowship. In 2002, she completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine at Queens Hospital Center in New York, obtaining a Certificate of Excellence for the best research project as well as a Certificate of Excellence in laparoscopic surgery.
After a fellowship program in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, she moved back to New York where she accepted a position as a director of reproductive endocrinology and infertility, director of gynecology, and Residency Program director at the Nassau University Medical Center. She served as the clerkship director for Stony Brook University, American University of the Caribbean and NY College of Osteopathic Medicine medical and physician assistant students. Dr. Tetrokalashvili is the former President of the Faculty Senate at American University of Caribbean. She was elected as the Vice President of Medical Staff and Medical Board at NUMC.
Dr. Tetrokalashvili became the Chairwoman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Health and Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health, where she is fully committed to educating next generation of health care providers and highest quality of patient centered care.
Dr. Tetrokalashvili actively performs and teaches the latest minimally invasive operative laparoscopic techniques in managing the most complex infertility and gynecological problems.
She, has been included in the Top Obstetrician and Gynecologist listing by Consumers Research Council of America and is the recipient of the CREOG National Faculty awards.
Dr. Tetrokalashvili graduated from the APGO/CREOG Academic Scholars and Leaders Program. She is the Fellow of American College of Ob/Gyn and American College of Surgeons.
Sushma Nakra, M.D. M.S, FACOG
Associate Chairperson
Dr. Sushma Nakra, an accomplished physician and leader with MD Degree, is a fellow of American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (FACOG) and a member of Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (MRCOG) eligible, London, UK. Additionally, she has a Masters in Healthcare Administration (MS) from New York University. During her tenure at South Brooklyn Health Hospital she has served as Chairperson (Interim) four times and has served as Associate Chair for the department for more than 20 years.
Currently she is the Associate Chair of the department. In these capacities she has trained physicians in residency training, supervised junior attending physicians. She is the lead person in developing and implementing departmental policies, Clinical Proposals development for Family Planning Grants, quality improvement and assurance programs, and has always been on the frontline for JCAH/PCAP audits and visits.
Sherman Dunn, D.O., FACOG, FACOOG, (Dist.)
Residency Program Director
Dr. Sherman Dunn is an Ob/Gyn generalist. He has been on staff at the NYC Health+ Hospital/South Brooklyn Health for the past 26 years. He earned his B.A. and M.S. from New York University.
Dr. Dunn completed his medical education at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine now NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Dunn completed his Ob/Gyn residency at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora Colorado.
At South Brooklyn Health hospital, Dr. Dunn serves as the ACGME Obstetrics and Gynecology Program Director. He is the Vice President of the South Brooklyn Health Hospital Medical and Dental Staff and is a member of the Medical Executive Committee.
Dr. Dunn is an distinguish Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He served as Chair of the Government Affairs Committee. He has served as Program Inspector for the ACOOG. He serves on the Postgraduate Evaluations and Standard Committee and on the Finance Committee. Dr. Dunn is Trustee of the ACOOG board.
Dr. Dunn is a Health Policy Fellow. A Fellow and Diplomate of the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians.
Dr. Dunn is a leader in multiple statewide physician organizations. He was the past President of the New York State Osteopathic Medical Society. Dr. Dunn is a trustee of the NYSOMS Board. He chairs the legislature and Insurance Committee. He served as the 167th President of the Medical Society for the County of Kings. He is life-time member of the Association of the Chinese American Physician USA Inc.
Dr. Dunn is an advocate for responsible health care legislation. He is a long-time member of the House of Delegates for the American Osteopathic Association. He is a member of the House of Delegates for the Doctors Council SEIU. This organization advocatess on the behalf of the medical and dental staff at South Brooklyn Health Hospital. He is a delegate of the Medical Society of the County of Kings reporting to the Medical Society of the State of New York. Dr. Dunn mentors’ medical students to embrace political advocacy as part of their medical education. Dr. Dunn leads contingencies of medical students from NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine, Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine/Harlem and Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine/Middletown on the annual DO Day in Albany NY.
Radu Apostol, DO, FACOG

Director of Gynecology/ Minimally Invasive Surgery
Dr. Radu Apostol is the Division Director of Gynecology as well as the Associate Residency Program Director in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at NYC/HHC – South Brooklyn Health. Dr. Apostol completed his undergraduate studies at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. Following medical school at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, he completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. He then went on to work in private practice in Connecticut where in 2013 he was named as “TOP DOC, Obstetrics & Gynecology” in Connecticut Magazine.
Dr. Apostol then completed a 2-year formal fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Robotic Gynecologic Surgery (MIGS) through the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL) with world renowned surgeons at St. Luke’s – Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City. There he learned to manage complex gynecologic cases using the least-invasive approaches. He is an expert in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery with special interest in managing complex gynecologic cases, advanced laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery for the treatment of severe endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain, uterine leiomyomas as well as reproductive surgery. He is Board Certified through the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Apostol is a member of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists, Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists as well as the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Apostol has authored or co-authored multiple peer-reviewed publications as well as two textbook chapters. He is also an ad-hoc reviewer for the Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology (JMIG) as well as the Journal of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (JSLS). Dr. Apostol also serves as a member on the Committee on Video-based Education, Obstetrics & Gynecology division, for the American College of Surgeons.
Mamta Purohit, MD, FACOG

Dr. Mamta Purohit, MD is general OB Gyn, Associate residency program director and Health care simulation specialist.
She has completed her Medical school training at Sawai Man Singh Medical College in Jaipur. She completed her OB Gyn residency at UMDNJ- New Jersey Medical School in 2007. After completion of residency she stayed on faculty as Assistant Professor prior to moving to South Brooklyn Health Hospital in 2012. She has also completed Health care Simulation Fellowship in 2016 and currently working as General OB Gyn and Associate residency program director.
Her interests are general OB GYN and teaching and training health care professionals at various levels. She is involved with medical simulation, and resident education at South Brooklyn Health Hospital.
She participates in preparing health care staff for variety of medical situations ranging from routine procedures like central line placement to handling of medical emergencies like post-partum hemorrhage. Residents have access to simulation lab where they can prepare for real life situations in a controlled and safe environment.
Grigol Adeishvili, MD, FACOG

Grigol Adeishvili, MD, is a board-certified attending OB/GYN in South Brooklyn Health Hospital, PAGNY.
After graduation from Tbilisi State medical University (Georgia) and receiving MD degree in 1995, he completed residency program at the same university. He practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology in Georgia for 9 years. Since he emigrated to USA, he completed residency program at Albert Einstein College of Medicine Beth Israel Medical Center Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program. He became attending at South Brooklyn Health Hospital in 2013.
Grigol Adeishvili is fellow of the American Board of Obstetrics and Genecology.
Dr. Adeishvili performs full range of obstetrics and gynecology surgeries. He is an author of several papers and strongly participates in residents and student’s education.
While working at PAGNY, Dr Adeishvili completed training in leadership.
Cedric Olivera, MD
Faculty Attending Physician of Urogynecology
Dr. Cedric Olivera at Century Medical and Dental Center in Brooklyn specializes in treating conditions of the pelvic floor including urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, as well as causes of pelvic pain such as endometriosis, fibroids, interstitial Cystitis, adenomyosis, and chronic urethral syndrome. Our goal is to improve and maintain your overall health and to empower you with an understanding of your condition. Risks, benefits, and alternative treatment options will be discussed to facilitate the best possible outcome for each patient. Dr. Olivera is one of very few double boards certified, fellowship trained FPMRS doctors in Brooklyn. He currently practices out of Mount Sinai hospital, Richmond University Medical Center, The Brooklyn Hospital, and South Brooklyn Health Hospital. This versatility allows him to personalize the hospital experience requested by his patients.
Peyman Alaghband, MD

Peyman Alaghband, MD is a generalist OB/GYN. He holds a title as Attending Physician since 2012 at NYC Health+Hospital/South Brooklyn Health. He earned his medical degree from Iran in 1998. He completed his residency 2012 at the State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate.
Dr. Alaghband is board Certified in Obstetrics & Gynecology since 2015. Dr. Alaghband has been practicing all aspect of OB/Gyn. He has extensive experience in Gynecology including advanced laparoscopic surgery, vaginal surgeries, colposcopy and conization.
Dr. Alaghband is trained to educate residents and students in the operating room as well as Colposcopy.
Allan J. Jacobs, MD
Director Gynecologic Oncology
Allan J. Jacobs, M.D., J.D., is Director of Gynecologic Oncology. He is Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, a member of the New York Bar, and holds faculty positions at Stony Brook Medical School and New York Medical College. After graduating from the Bronx High School of Science, he received a B.A. from Cornell University and an M.D. from the University of Southern California. He completed his residency at Parkland Memorial Hospital and his oncology fellowship at the Mount Sinai Hospital.
He has been Chair of Ob/Gyn and residency program director at two community teaching hospitals in addition to practicing gynecologic oncology for his entire career. His academic interests are the interaction between individual rights and the government interest in protecting the health and safety of the population. He has written numerous papers and is writing a book on this subject.
He performs a full range of gynecological oncologic surgery except for certain unusual ultra-radical procedures. He also performs and assists other gynecologists with difficult procedures for benign conditions. He is strongly committed to resident education in the operating room, at the bedside, and in small groups.
Gertrudes Jacinto Francisco, MD
Community Physician
Dr. Gertrudes Jacinto Francisco, MD has been serving the Coney Island Community since 1987, when she was first hired at South Brooklyn Health Hospital. Prior to joining South Brooklyn Health Hospital, she served as an Attending Physician at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center. Dr. Francisco has also been on the Faculty Staff, as Attending Physician, at multiple hospitals in the Brooklyn area, including Woodhull Medical & Mental Health Center and Interfaith Medical Center.
In 1998 Dr. Francisco joined a FQHC based Facility in Queens, The Joseph P Addabbo Family Health Center. Dr. Francisco was able to bring patients from Queens to South Brooklyn Health Hospital for Birth Delivery and GYN surgical cases. In 2016, Dr. Francisco left the Queens area to concentrate on her practice in Coney Island, Brooklyn.
All this time, she had been with other Institutions, she never left South Brooklyn Health Hospital. Her loyalty is with this Hospital and the Coney Island Community.
At present, her main interest is Obstetrics, and her GYN surgical cases, are managed by the South Brooklyn Health Hospital GYN team.

Paul C. Liu, MD
Director of Robotic Surgery
Prior to joining NYC Health+Hopsital/South Brooklyn Health, Dr. Liu was the Director of robotic surgery for Beacon Health System in South Bend Indiana. Presently Dr. Liu is also the Director of Robotic Surgery at Nassau University Medical Center.
Dr. Liu is a trained Gynecologic Oncologists with National Prominence.
His work includes the first Gene therapy research in the New York City Metropolitan area, for patient with advanced ovarian cancer. In 2006, he was featured by the Discovery Channel for his pioneering work in assisting the first epithelial ovarian cancer patient in the US to achieve motherhood, after cancer treatment. Dr. Liu has also published extensively in the area of gynecologic oncology. Some of his work has contributed to changing the standard of how gynecologic cancer patients are treated.
Dr. Liu received his BA from Cornell University and subsequently his JD from Rutgers University School of Law. Dr. Liu was a practicing attorney prior to pursuing a career as a cancer surgeon. After obtaining his MD from The Chicago Medical School, Dr. Liu completed his residency at Columbia Presbyterian in New York and his fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the University of Pennsylvania. He is multi-lingual with fluency in Chinese, Portuguese and Spanish.
Dr. Liu is currently part-time Attending Physician at NYC Health+Hospital/South Brooklyn Health, as the Director of Robotic Surgery in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department.
Daniel Lasser, MD
Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine
Daniel Lasser, MD is Director of Perinatology and Ob-Gyn Ultrasound. His residency was at Maimonides Medical Center and his fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine was at Columbia University, New York Presbyterian Hospital where he was a faculty member and researcher.
Dr. Lasser was Director of obstetrical services at New York Weill Cornell. His interests are in management of maternal medical conditions during pregnancy, preeclampsia and fetal ultrasound. Dr Lasser was recipient of the faculty teaching award and patient safety award at Coney Island.
Aycan Turkmen, MD

Aycan Turkmen, MD is an Attending Obstetrician/Gynecologist here at South Brooklyn Health Hospital and a true Brooklyn native growing up south of Prospect Park and spending her summers at nearby Manhattan Beach. She journeyed to Washington DC to receive her undergraduate degree from Georgetown University, graduated from Georgetown University Medical School and returned to Brooklyn for residency at Maimonides Medical Center.
At Coney caring for women from all over the world with varied backgrounds, different beliefs and unique needs she faced numerous ethical and moral dilemmas in the course of daily practice and unable to find satisfactory answers went back to graduate school and completed a Master’s degree in bioethics from Albany Medical College. She serves on the Bioethics Committee as a Clinical Bioethics Consultant providing education and support to her colleagues, residents and clinical staff.
Hakima Fisher, MD

Dr. Fisher attended undergraduate school at Dartmouth College and obtained her medical degree from SUNY Health Science Center of Brooklyn. She completed her Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at Winthrop University Hospital and Westchester Medical Center/Metropolitan hospital. Following residency, she joined South Brooklyn Health Hospital.
Dr. Fisher’s interests include serving patients in labor and delivery, and working collaboratively with the entire team including nurses, residents, technicians to provide best possible care.
Shawn Yunayev, MD

Shawn Yunayev, MD is an Obstetrician/Gynecologist practicing in New York City. He is a graduate of St George’s University School of Medicine and completed his residency at New York Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. His areas of focus include the preventative care, diagnostic approach and managed care of disease states pertaining to the female pelvis, reproductive organs as well as the care of obstetrical patients. Since 2016, his non-profit TAMRF (trans-atlantics medical relief foundation) has focused on promoting programs and policies that encourage preventative care in areas with limited access to healthcare.
