NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program is a community-based residency program serving a diverse patient population in Southern Brooklyn, NY. The postgraduate program in Obstetrics and Gynecology is approved for three residents per year through four years of training. The program is designed to train outstanding Obstetricians and Gynecologists capable of becoming leaders in our field committed to excellence in Women’s Health. Our faculty is dedicated to teaching and we place great emphasis on education with activities such as Grand Rounds, Morbidity and Mortality conference, Simulation activities and Journal Club being held on a routine basis. This has been reflected by our 100% ABOG pass rate.
Our staff is comprised of full-time faculty Ob/Gyn Generalists as well as subspecialists including Gyn-Oncology, Maternal Fetal Medicine, Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility as well as Minimally Invasive Gynecologic surgeons. Our curriculum is able to focus on strengths and interests of each individual resident as they progress through a competency-based and ACGME milestones focused curriculum.
The residency program is organized to optimize the progressive development of the resident through feedback and instruction. Assigned faculty mentors and the program director serve as facilitators. At the completion of four years, the resident will have experienced every possible clinical condition noted in the specialty and will have acquired the necessary training to continue onto a fellowship or to function as a specialist or consultant in the field, as well as serve as a primary care provider in general obstetrics and gynecology.

Didactics
The program ensures a weekly block of protected time devoted to structured didactic sessions for the residents. Included in this time are presentations of interesting clinical cases by our PGY3 and PGY4 residents, Grand Rounds lectures by regional and nationally recognized speakers, as well as core chapter reviews, simulation lab, research reviews, and speakers from within the department and hospital involving a multitude of topics relevant to the specialty.
Curriculum
Residents are assigned 9 blocks of rotation each year during the four-year program, with three months at the PGY3/4-year level dedicated to management of high-risk pregnancies in the Section of Maternal Fetal Medicine. They are also assigned to Gynecology distributed over four years, with several months at the PGY3/4-year level dedicated to Gynecologic Oncology, and in the PGY3 year level, several months of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.
The program’s primary care objectives are accomplished in the first year with three months rotating in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine and its subspecialties. Critical Care exposure occurs in the PGY2 year with a rotation through the combined Critical/Intensive Care Units.
In accordance with the new qualifying examination requirements, residents are expected to complete and achieve certification in the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) in their PGY4 year, although it is strongly encouraged for this to be accomplished during PGY3 year.
Our simulation laboratory provides training resources for residents to not only prepare for the FLS, but to also practice for, manage and excel in laparoscopic procedures.
Scholarly Activities & Research
Research is encouraged during the four years of residency and is facilitated by the assignment of a preceptor/mentor to guide the resident through the clinical areas of interest. We have a research department that is managed by our Research Director who is available to review the statistical and essential structure of each research project. A minimum of one research project is required to be completed in the four years of training. Our residents have had their research projects presented at multiple national annual meetings, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist (ACOG), American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL) and American College of Surgeons (ACS).
