NYC Health + Hospitals South Brooklyn Health’s Dental General Practice Residency (GPR) Program is fully accredited by The Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) since 2016.
Currently, the program accepts six GPR residents from CODA accredited dental schools, and is looking to expand to 10 GPR residents in the near future. Residents will provide clinical care to patients under the supervision of a hospital attending in both the out-patient and in-patient setting.
In the out-patient dental clinic, the resident will act as a primary oral health care provider by delivering comprehensive oral health care, treating dental emergencies, and providing preventative oral health care. Residents will rotate in Emergency Medicine and Anesthesia for at least 70 hours.
In the Emergency Department, residents will obtain and interpret chief complaints, clinical findings, and other diagnostic data in order to establish a medical assessment.
In the Anesthesia Department, residents will conduct preoperative assessment, patient monitoring, recognition and understanding of the pharmacological agents, and assessment of patient recovery.
Prior to clinic, residents will attend lectures on both Medical and Dental topics that will expand their knowledge, and on a monthly basis, residents will partake in literature review with the dental attending staff.
By the end of the year, each resident will present a complex case that must encompass at least three dental specialty disciplines. Currently, clinic is open Monday through Friday 8am to 4pm, and after-hours call is taken by the residents by pager.
Curriculum
The SBH GPR curriculum consists of overall goals and objectives, and specific goals outlined below.
Overall Goals and Objectives
- The GPR Dental Resident will provide general dentistry in the hospital setting which includes health promotion; disease prevention; comprehensive oral healthcare; emergency dental care, and multidisciplinary care.
- The GPR Dental Resident will provide general dental care to a wide variety of patients in the hospital setting. These patients may have complex medical statuses, special needs, and be of all ages.
- The GPR Dental Resident will attend lectures that will strengthen their ability to provide patient care. These educational sessions will be provided in a conference room setting, allowing for Dental Faculty to resident interaction. The GPR Dental Resident will present an end of the year case to the dental team, and CMO of moderate complexity (must include 3 Dental Disciplines). The end of the year case will be approved and mentored by Dental Faculty.
- The GPR Dental Resident will provide oral health care in a hospital setting and engage in community service.
Specific Goals
Resident will manage delivery of patient-focused oral health care and act as a primary oral health care provider to include providing emergency and multidisciplinary comprehensive oral health care; obtaining informed consent; functioning effectively within interdisciplinary health care teams, including consultation and referral.
Residents will provide patient-focused care that is coordinated by the general practitioner, and direct health promotion and disease prevention activities.
Residents will assess, diagnose, and plan for the provision of multidisciplinary oral health care for a wide variety of patients including patients with special needs.
Residents will provide advanced level care in operative dentistry; restorative dentistry; periodontal therapy; endodontic therapy; oral surgery; dental emergencies, and pain and anxiety control techniques.
Residents will be trained in managing medical emergencies; implants; oral mucosal diseases; temporomandibular disorder, and orofacial pain.
Applying to the Program
All applicants must be educationally eligible for the New York State Dental License, and graduate from ADA accredited Dental school. Applications are only accepted through the ADEA Pass website, and only completed applications will be reviewed and considered for interviews. Applicants will be invited for an interview based on letters of recommendation, moral character, academic credentials, preparedness, ability, aptitude, and personal qualities. Interviews are scheduled on a rolling basis through December 15th. The program participates with the Dental National Matching Programs.
