HPV Vaccines

NYC Health + Hospitals recommends that parents get their children vaccinated with the HPV vaccine.

The vaccine protects against human papillomavirus (HPV), one of the most common infections in the U.S. HPV infection can lead to several cancers later in life. In fact, almost all cervical cancers are caused by HPV.  The virus can also lead to cancers of the throat, anus, vagina, vulva, and penis.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends the HPV vaccine as a routine childhood immunization, ideally beginning between ages 9 and 12. This timing gives children the strongest immune response and protects them before they are exposed to the virus.

Getting vaccinated is the best way to prevent HPV infections that can lead to cancer.

How We Care for You

NYC Health + Hospitals routinely offers the HPV vaccine to children, adolescents, and young adults. Following AAP guidance, we encourage early vaccination because protection is strongest when the vaccine is given at ages 9–12.

All children should receive the HPV vaccine. HPV affects all genders and vaccination protects against the types of HPV that cause cancer and genital warts. Because HPV is spread through intimate contact later in life, receiving the vaccine before exposure is essential.

Dosing schedule:

  • Children who start the series before age 15 need two shots, at least six months apart.
  • Anyone starting the series at age 15 or older will need three shots over six months.

Even if someone is already sexually active or may have been exposed to HPV, vaccination can still help. The vaccine protects against several high-risk HPV types and most people have not been exposed to all of them.

While HPV infections are most common in adolescence and young adulthood, anyone can acquire a new HPV infection with a new partner at any age. Adults wondering whether they may be at risk should talk to their provider.

For adults over age 21, regular cancer screenings remain an important part of preventive health care. Your provider can guide you on which screenings you need.

We understand that HPV and sexual health can be sensitive topics for families. Our team takes special care to provide clear, supportive education and to make the vaccination process comfortable for everyone.
