Depression

At NYC Health + Hospitals, our primary care teams provide compassionate care for those who are looking for help with depression. The Collaborative Care for Depression program – available at our 11 municipal hospitals and six community health centers – is set up to meet your needs, adapt to your comfort level and work around your schedule. Depression hurts, and we can help. You don’t have to go through this alone.

What is depression?

Depression is a common medical condition that affects many people. It can affect the body, behavior and mind. It can interfere with a person’s life. Depression makes it hard to go through normal, daily activities such as sleeping, eating or working. It can also hurt relationships with families and friends.

You’re not alone

People who may be suffering from depression should know that they are not alone, it’s not their fault and there is help. One in 12 adult New Yorkers suffers from depression. If you suffer from depression, you may feel embarrassed – afraid of what others may think of you. However, you should not feel afraid to speak up and get help. Depression can be managed and treated.

Symptoms of depression

If you have the following symptoms for at least two weeks, you may be suffering from depression:

  • Feeling sad or anxious
  • Feeling bad about yourself
  • Feelings of guilt or feeling “empty inside”
  • Feeling tired and having less energy than usual
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities you enjoy
  • Problems with paying attention, remembering or making decisions
  • Eating too much or too little
  • Gaining or losing weight
  • Trouble with falling asleep or sleeping too much
  • Thoughts of hurting yourself or death

How we care for you

Here at NYC Health + Hospitals, you are seen by a primary care physician who screens you for depression – just as they would screen you for any other medical condition, like diabetes or high blood pressure. The doctor works with a care team that helps you manage your depression.

Treatment for depression is important. It can reduce symptoms of depression, and your condition will improve. Treatment can include talk therapy – speaking to someone who is a counselor/therapist about your feelings and concerns, however big or small – medicine or a combination of the two. As depression affects people in different ways, treatment will also be different for everyone.

We work with you

We care about you. We can work around your schedule – you can come in for an appointment or talk to your care provider over the phone. If you come in for an appointment, you will be treated by the primary care doctor. You will not be sent to a mental health or other outside clinic to get help. We are here, and we have your back. We can figure this out together.

NYC Health + Hospitals provides high-quality health care to all New Yorkers, regardless of their ability to pay. We’ll also help you find health insurance if you need it. Click here to learn more about MetroPlusHealth, our affordable and comprehensive health insurance plan.
