Schneps Media recognized four leaders from NYC Health + Hospitals as 2023 Healthcare Heroes. The awardees were Svetlana Lipyanskaya, MPA, CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health; Sheela Maru, MD, Obstetrician Gynecologist and Director of the Global Health Institute at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst; Brindha Sridhar, Vice President of Customer Experience Strategy at MetroPlusHealth; and Julie Myers, MD, MPH, Deputy Chief Medical Officer at MetroPlusHealth. A total of 43 people were recognized on this year’s list. Svetlana Lipyanskaya, MPA – the first female CEO for NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health (formerly NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island) – has aligned the hospital’s mission, vision and values around access, quality and patient-centered care. She has also shepherded the creation of several life-saving services and programs, including a new cardiac catheterization lab, certification of a percutaneous coronary intervention program, and designation as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission. Ms. Lipyanskaya’s keen fiscal stewardship has yielded a sound operating budget, resulting in revenue tens of millions of dollars over budget, and she has brought in nearly $40 million in capital funding to expand hospital services.
“I humbly accept this award on behalf of the courageous men and women at our institution who work tirelessly to support our patients,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health CEO Svetlana Lipyanskaya. “These individuals are the real heroes who keep our communities healthy every day.”
Dr. Sheela Maru is an Obstetrician Gynecologist at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst; Director of the Global Health Institute at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst; and an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Health Systems Design and Global Health and Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Maru worked closely with community partners to build the HoPE Community Doula Program. In addition, she has been an advisor for the organization Possible, supporting health systems strengthening and implementation science work in rural Nepal for the past decade. Her research is focused on improving healthcare access and quality for women and children in low-resource settings.
“As a researcher and care provider at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, I have 3 goals: to deeply understand the causes for maternal health disparities in NYC, to advance respectful maternity care, and to build bridges of trust with the communities of Queens,” said Sheela Maru, MD, Obstetrician Gynecologist and Director of the Global Health Institute at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst.
Julie Myers, MD, MPH is the Deputy Chief Medical Officer at MetroPlusHealth, where she oversees HIV services, care management, managed long-term care, and children’s medical services. She is also an Assistant Professor in Medicine at Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, where she provides HIV primary care. Her work is informed by her previous role at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, where as the Director of HIV Prevention in the Bureau of HIV, she led the citywide scale-up of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and directed the implementation of HIV prevention interventions at clinics and community-based organizations citywide through innovative program design, rigorous monitoring and evaluation, and data-driven quality management.
