NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull has been named a recipient of a 2024 IPRO Quality Award for reducing the use of urinary catheters and central line catheters and achieving six consecutive quarters free of central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs). The hospital-wide endeavor involved the clinical teams from the inpatient medical, surgical, and critical care units. During daily interdisciplinary rounds, the team assessed each case where a central line or urinary catheter was in use and whether an alternative could be used instead, contributing to the prompt removal of these invasive devices as soon as they were no longer clinically required. The interventions led to increased team communication, improved collaboration, and decreased use of central line and urinary catheters, which in turn resulted in an overall reduction of central line-associated infections. Woodhull Hospital is a participant in the IPRO Hospital Quality Improvement Contract (HQIC), a federal program focused on improving the quality of care provided to Medicare patients across the United States and funded by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS).
“We are honored to receive the IPRO Quality Award, which recognizes NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull commitment to quality improvement and patient safety. This achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff in implementing effective infection prevention measures. We are proud of our success in reducing the utilization rates of urinary and central line catheters, which reflects our ongoing efforts to provide the highest standard of quality care to our patients,” said Gregory Calliste, Chief Executive Officer, NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull.
“This honor recognizes the hard work of so many here at Woodhull who dedicate themselves every day to great quality care and patient safety. We are on a mission to be our best for the patients and the communities we serve,” said Dr. Ross MacDonald, Chief Medical Officer, NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull.
“Recognizing providers that achieve measurable improvement in their quality outcomes is an important aspect of the work we do,” said IPRO CEO Ted Will. “It allows us to showcase the meaningful progress that is made through our partnership with provider organizations that implement evidence-based interventions into their processes.”
“We are proud to work with nursing homes, hospitals, community-based providers, and other stakeholders on these important quality improvement initiatives,” said Clare Bradley, MD, IPRO’s Sr. VP and Chief Medical Officer. “NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull and the other honorees exemplify the dedication of healthcare providers across the spectrum who have committed themselves to providing the highest quality of care and have done so despite the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, staffing shortages, an aging workforce and growing number of patients with complex needs.”
“We are grateful to be acknowledged with the IPRO Quality Award, a testament to NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull unwavering commitment to enhancing quality and safety in healthcare. This recognition highlights our organization’s proactive approach to infection prevention and our notable achievements in reducing the use of urinary catheters and central line catheters,” said Elizabeth Udeji, Associate Executive Director Quality Management, NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull.
“Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) continue to pose a threat to patients in acute care settings. Effectively preventing and controlling HAIs requires an interdisciplinary team working in a collaborative manner. Our team proved that evidence-based interventions are effective in preventing healthcare-associated infections, promoting high quality patient care and reducing hospital costs,” said Dilcia Ortega, Director of Infection Prevention, NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull.
Honorees were celebrated at IPRO’s 40th annual meeting on June 11. That event also featured a keynote address by Timothy Hoff, PhD, Professor of Management, Healthcare Systems, and Health Policy in the D’Amore-McKim School of Business and School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs, Northeastern University, in Boston, Massachusetts, on “How AI Can Transform Long-Term Care,” as well as a presentation on “Collaborating for Quality,” by the Administrator for the CMS New York Regional Office, Kathleen Otte.
