NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health today announced that it has recently been recognized as a “Gold Safe Sleep Champion” by Cribs for Kids® National Infant Safe Sleep Initiative. The Gold-level Certification is the highest level of national safe sleep certification and recognizes South Brooklyn Health’s commitment to reducing infant sleep-related deaths by: 1) promoting best safe sleep practices; 2) educating the public on infant sleep safety; 3) establishing infant-safe sleep policies; and 4) modeling infant-safe sleep for our patients. This is South Brooklyn Health’s second five-year designation, which represents a decade-long commitment to infant safe sleep.

“I am proud of our women’s health team, who continue to implement best practices to support infant safe sleep, and reduce the risk of sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) in South Brooklyn,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health CEO Svetlana Lipyanskaya. “We know that modeling safe infant sleep in the hospital and providing education to families has a significant effect on infant mortality.”

“The incredible work to ensure parents are set up to successfully care for their newborns upon discharge is reflected in this recognition”, said NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health Maternal Child Health Director of Nursing Jennifer Tutone. “This valuable partnership greatly contributes to immeasurable safe and healthy newborn outcomes.”

We could not have accomplished this milestone without continuing to develop and implement policies, training, and family/caregiver education, as well as implementing a wearable blanket program, maintaining a quality improvement initiative via safe sleep audits, and assessing & distributing safe sleep space to at risk families. In our new Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hospital, we offer private, comfortable rooms for new parents and babies to bond in, because we believe an intimate, personal birthing experience is a right, not a privilege. These amenities all contribute to care experience of our patients, thus resulting in excellent patient care for all.
