NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health Celebrates New Location for Ida G. Israel Community Health Center

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries joins ceremony marking a major milestone in expanding healthcare access for South Brooklyn

NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health CEO Svetlana Lipyanskaya, NYC Health + Hospitals President and CEO Dr. Katz, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Assembly Member Alec Brook-Krasny, and others celebrate the new location of the Ida G. Israel clinic.

Brooklyn, NY — Today, NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health celebrated the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new location of the Ida G. Israel Community Health Center, marking a significant milestone in the continued commitment to providing high-quality healthcare services to the South Brooklyn community. The event, held at 1607 Surf Avenue, welcomed House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, along with community leaders, healthcare professionals, and local officials, to commemorate the expansion of critical healthcare services in the area. The Ida G. Israel Community Health Center has been a vital part of Coney Island’s healthcare landscape, providing family medicine, and substance use disorder and chemical dependency services. The relocation enhances accessibility and convenience for patients, with primary care, family medicine, pediatric, and colorectal services now available at 1607 Surf Avenue, and substance use disorder and chemical dependency care at 2932 West 16th Street. The new site will open in the coming weeks following final approval from the New York State Department of Health.

“In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, we made clear that the Ida G. Israel Community Health Center would be rebuilt on the West End of Coney Island. That was a promise to the people of this community. And today, thanks to New York City officials, community leaders and colleagues, that promise has been kept,” said House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08). “Down in Washington, House Democrats will continue our fight to ensure that not a dime from Medicaid or any other federal funding is cut from the Ida G. Israel Community Health Center or from any health care services for the people of Coney Island.”

“This new location represents our unwavering commitment to meeting the healthcare needs of the Coney Island community,” said Svetlana Lipyanskaya, MPA, CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health. “By expanding and enhancing our facilities, we are strengthening access to vital services and ensuring that our patients receive the highest quality care in a welcoming and supportive environment.”

“The new Ida G. Israel Community Health Center allows us to better serve our patients with services in a modern, accessible setting,” said Michelle Bekman, Chief Growth Officer at NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health. “This move reinforces our dedication to meeting the evolving healthcare needs of the community with excellence and compassion.”

“The Ida G Israel Community Health Center has been an integral part of the community for over 25 years and offers comprehensive behavioral health and addiction services. This new modernized space will enhance these services provided to the community around NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health, making it easier for our patients to access care for their addiction challenges,” said Omar Fattal, MD, MPH, Deputy Chief Medical Officer and System Chief of Behavioral Health. “Our goals are to start life-saving treatment, reduce risk, make our patients feel seen, and treat them with dignity. We are dedicated to addressing the substance use crisis, better understanding and treating patients living with this disease, providing education and continuing to build a strong sense of community and recovery.”

“I am excited to support the opening of the new Ida G. Israel Community Health Center,” said Theodore G. Long, MD, MHS, Senior Vice President of Ambulatory Care and Population Health at NYC Health + Hospitals. “This state-of-the-art facility will offer world-class primary care coupled with substance use and behavioral health services—the care that the Coney Island community deserves to live their healthiest lives, without exception.”

“The opening of the new Ida G. Israel Community Health Center is a testament to her enduring legacy,” said Rosanne DeGennaro, Chair of the NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health Community Advisory Board. “Ida G.’s spirit of compassion and service lives on, ensuring that our community continues to receive the care and support they deserve—now and for generations to come.”

The Ida G. Israel Community Health Center continues to serve as a trusted provider in South Brooklyn, offering integrated healthcare solutions that prioritize accessibility, affordability, and excellence in patient care. The newly relocated sites are designed to improve patient experience while ensuring continuity of care for all.
