The Emergency Nursing Team at NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens has been selected as a recipient of the Emergency Nurses Association’s 2024 Lantern Award for demonstrating excellence in leadership, practice, education, advocacy, and research performance. The Lantern Award showcases the Emergency Department’s accomplishments in incorporating evidence-based practice and innovation into emergency care. Through collaboration and teamwork, the department achieved the Primary Stroke Center designation, ACEP-accredited Geriatric Emergency Department, and excelled in areas such as early emergency care and intervention, ED follow-up program, sepsis management, medication safety, falls prevention, restraint reduction, and patient experience. This recognition serves as a visible symbol of the team’s commitment to quality, safety, and a healthy work environment, and further highlights the hospital’s dedication to providing the highest standard of care to the community.

“We are thrilled and honored to receive the prestigious Lantern Award from the Emergency Nurses Association. This recognition is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and innovation of our emergency nursing team,” stated Neil J. Moore, MBA, MPA, FACHE, CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens.

“I am extremely pleased and proud that the Emergency Nurses Association has bestowed the prestigious ENA Lantern Award on our NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens Emergency Department,” said NYC Health + Hospitals Senior Vice President, Chief Nursing Executive Natalia Cineas, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN. “Our Queens nurses are instrumental in providing compassionate and life-saving care while responding to more than 88,000 emergency visits every year. Queens is one of just 94 emergency departments around the world to be recognized with this esteemed designation in 2024 and joins our own NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan as a 2024 EMA Lantern Award recipient; NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health received the Award in 2023. All three of these emergency departments earned the ENA Lantern Award by demonstrating exceptional and innovative evidence-based practice. Queens’ achievement is all the more remarkable considering that the Emergency Department has been serving a community where numerous hospitals have closed in recent years, more than doubling Queens’ Emergency Department patient volume. We congratulate our Queens nurses for advancing the emergency nursing profession and practice through their leadership, quality and safety improvements, research, and advocacy, and we applaud this impressive recognition of their commitment to nursing excellence and exceptional patient care.”

“We are immensely proud of our Emergency Nursing Team at NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens for their exceptional dedication and commitment to providing the highest standard of care to our community. This prestigious Lantern Award is a testament to their relentless pursuit of excellence and innovation in emergency care,” expressed Dr. Dave Holson, Chief Medical Officer of NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens.

“Achieving the prestigious Lantern award demonstrates the excellence of our nursing team and the designation is a testament of our nurses’ positive and innovative practice as they continue to expand their role through research and education. Our nurses have been dedicated to consistently provide high quality, safe care to our community and patients regardless of our ED volumes under their exceptional director, Suja Mohan. Our ED nursing team is truly a dynamic patient-centered, collaborative, cohesive team that is the foundation of the Emergency Department. I am extremely proud of what they do every day!” said Dr. Abbi-Gail Baboolal, Chief Nursing Officer of NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens.

Dr. Denise Chuang, Director of Emergency Medicine of NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens, also expressed her thoughts, stating, “The receipt of the Lantern Award reflects the unwavering dedication and collaborative spirit of our entire emergency medicine team at NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens. This recognition underscores our commitment to safe, high-quality patient care and the creation of a supportive and positive work environment for our nursing staff.”

NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens’ Lantern Award will be proudly displayed in the emergency department. As a recipient, NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens will be acknowledged in upcoming ENA publications, on the ENA website, and during Emergency Nursing 2024, the association’s annual conference in Las Vegas, Sept. 4-7.
