NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens Celebrates Successful 2025 Lead Summer Program for Youth
Assemblywoman Alicia Hyndman’s $50,000 Grant Fuels a Transformative Five-Week Summer Experience for Local Youth

Queens, NY — NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens proudly celebrated the successful conclusion of its 2025 LEAD Summer Program with a vibrant graduation ceremony attended by nearly 150 people, including young participants, their families, hospital staff, and distinguished guests. The event highlighted the accomplishments of 48 young campers, aged 6 to 18, who participated in this year’s program, designed to provide a genuine camp experience for children facing social and emotional challenges. The LEAD program—Leadership, Empowerment, Alliance, and Discovery—once again proved to be a valuable resource for the community, thanks to the generous $50,000 in funding from Assemblywoman Alicia Hyndman. This support allowed the program to cover the costs of equipment, educational materials, meals, activities, and recreational field trips, ensuring access for families experiencing financial hardship.
Neil J. Moore, MBA, MPA, FACHE, CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens, expressed his gratitude, stating, “We are deeply honored to continue the legacy of providing essential mental health services through the LEAD program. The support of Assemblywoman Hyndman and our community partners has been invaluable. This program is not just about providing a summer camp experience; it’s about empowering young individuals to overcome challenges and thrive.”

Superintendent Dr. Eric Blake and York Early College Academy were acknowledged for their contribution in providing the venue, which played a crucial role in the program’s success. Special recognition was given to Shernette Walters, President of the Queens High School Presidents Council, for her instrumental role in facilitating this partnership.
Dr. John Navas, Director of the Behavioral Health Department at NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens, remarked, “Providing mental health services, especially to children and adolescents, is a crucial part of our mission. Our comprehensive behavioral health program offers a wide range of services, from emergency care to ongoing therapeutic support, ensuring that all New Yorkers receive the care they need without exception. The LEAD program exemplifies our commitment to fostering resilience and growth in young people.”
Chief Medical Officer Dave Holson also provided remarks during the event, highlighting the importance of such programs in building a healthier, more resilient community. “The LEAD Summer Program is a testament to our dedication to holistic healthcare, addressing both the physical and mental well-being of our young patients. By providing comprehensive mental health services and fostering a supportive community, we are empowering the next generation to overcome challenges and build resilience. I am grateful for the steadfast support of community leaders like Assemblywoman Alicia Hyndman, whose contributions make it possible for us to continue offering these vital programs. Together, we are building a healthier, brighter future for all,” said Dr. Holson.
The entire Behavioral Health team, particularly the Child Adolescent Clinic, was commended for their dedication and extraordinary efforts. Throughout the year, these young participants receive comprehensive mental health services from the hospital, underscoring our commitment to providing excellent care to individuals of all ages.
The day was filled with joy as the children enjoyed a lunch provided by the hospital, along with games and fun activities after the formal ceremony. Each child received a certificate recognizing their leadership, friendship, cooperation, and more.
Additionally, social work students from St. John’s University played a significant role in facilitating camp activities, including providing tutoring to the children. Their participation and contribution were pivotal to the program’s success, and the hospital extends its heartfelt thanks to them.
A great time was had by all, and the hospital is already looking forward to next year’s summer camp, eager to continue making a positive difference in the lives of its young participants.
