NYC Health + Hospitals President & CEO Dr. Mitchell Katz Named to City & State’s ‘2025 New York City Power 100’ Recognition List

Dr. Katz is recognized for transforming the city’s public health system, expanding access to care, and leading the city’s COVID-19 response

NYC Health + Hospitals President and CEO Mitchell Katz, MD, has been recognized by City & State’s “2025 New York City Power 100” as among the power brokers delivering for New Yorkers every day. Dr. Katz is credited for driving major initiatives to expand health care access for all New Yorkers.  During his tenure, he has overseen the adoption of a modern electronic health record system, launched a program that has placed over 1,200 patients into permanent housing, launched the health system’s humanitarian response to the asylum seeker crisis, increased the number of nurse positions, developed a modern ambulance transport system, expanded outreach for homeless New Yorkers, led the health system through the COVID-19 crisis, and turned around the financial health of the system by enrolling more patients into health insurance and appropriately billing insurance plans. Mitchell Katz, MD, is President and Chief Executive Officer of NYC Health + Hospitals, the largest municipal health care system in the United States, with a workforce of more than 40,000 health care professionals across a network of 11 hospitals, 5 skilled nursing facilities, dozens of community health centers, a home care agency and an insurance plan, MetroPlusHealth. Since his appointment in 2018, the health system has significantly expanded access to a wide range of health care services, including the creation of NYC Care, a universal health access program for uninsured New Yorkers serving more than 140,000 members.

Dr. Katz oversaw the adoption of a modern electronic health record system, increased the number of nurse positions in the system, developed a modern ambulance transport system, and expanded outreach and housing programs to improve the health of homeless New Yorkers. He also led the financial turn-around of NYC Health + Hospitals by eliminating the deficit through enrolling more New Yorkers into health insurance and appropriately billing insurance plans.

He is a graduate of Yale College and Harvard Medical School. He completed an internal medicine residency at UCSF Medical School and was an RWJ Clinical Scholar. Dr. Katz practices as a primary care physician at NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health, Gouverneur on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
