Patients at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan will soon benefit from access to a state-of-the-art suite for minimally invasive interventional radiology procedures, made possible through a $4M award in Fiscal Year 2024 capital funding from New York City Council Deputy Speaker Diana Ayala. The upgraded Interventional Radiology suite will allow the Radiology Department to treat a broader range of conditions, including vital organ angiography, port and stents placement and women’s health procedures such as uterine fibroid embolization. The main benefits of interventional radiology techniques are that they can reach the deep structures of the body through a body orifice or tiny incision using small needles and wires. This decreases risks, pain, and recovery compared to open procedures. Real-time visualization also allows precision guidance to the abnormality, making the procedure or diagnosis more accurate.
In addition to upgrades of the radiology suite, the funds will also be used to purchase anesthesia monitors. Monitoring is an essential component of anesthesia care, as anesthesia and surgery can cause rapid changes in vital functions. Equipment monitoring is used to titrate administration of anesthetic medication, to detect physiologic perturbations and allow intervention before the patient suffers harm, and to detect and correct equipment malfunction. Updating and enhancing this equipment will improve patient safety by creating a safe and effective environment for surgery, preventing any major complications from occurring and enhancing the physician’s ability to diagnose and treat patients.
“We are grateful to Deputy Speaker Diana Ayala for awarding this capital funding to upgrade our interventional radiology suite and purchase critically needed clinical equipment,” said Cristina Contreras, CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan. “As a community hospital, our goal is to ensure that our patients have access to quality health care as close to home as possible. “We thank Deputy Speaker Diana Ayala for her continued support, generosity, and commitment to the East Harlem/El Barrio community.”
“NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan is an essential community hospital which serves as a safety net for the residents of East Harlem,” said NYC Health + Hospitals President and CEO Mitchel Katz, MD. “Thank you to Deputy Speaker Diana Ayala and the NYC Council for their continued commitment to ensuring that our public hospital system receives its fair share of funding so that we can secure safer and more equitable healthcare outcomes for our patients and fulfill our mission of providing comprehensive, personalized care to all New Yorkers.”
“This four million dollar allocation will be a catalyst for positive change at Metropolitan Hospital,” remarked Diana Ayala, Deputy Speaker of the New York City Council. “It will enable them to modernize their infrastructure, enhance the skills of their staff, and expand their services to better serve our community. We believe that these investments will lead to improved patient care, increased patient access, and an overall healthier and happier community.”
Deputy Speaker Ayala also provided Metropolitan with $4.9 million in capital funding in FY 23, which is being used which is being used to purchase a new CT Scan, a C-ARM and ultrasound units. Deputy Speaker Ayala has provided the hospital with over $17 million dollars in capital funding since 2019, which has been used to purchase critically needed patient care equipment, as well as to renovate and modernize patient care units, including a cancer center which is currently under construction.
