NYC Health + Hospitals Marks Progress for ICU Bed Expansion in the Bronx
Statement of Cristina Contreras, Executive Director, NYC Health + Hospital North Central Bronx
Apr 24, 2020
“Last month we began the construction of 120 temporary ICU beds at NYC Health + Hospitals/North Central Bronx to help manage the surge of COVID-19 patients and support our health system’s plan to triple ICU bed capacity by May.
I’m pleased to report that construction is moving at a record pace and we will have the necessary new electric, plumbing, medical gas and other equipment ready to open the first set of ICU beds on the 10th floor of our hospital by the end of this month. The remaining temporary beds will be located in the 15th and 16th floor and will open in May, as planned.
I want to thank our partners Lothrop for design; Northstar with demolition; Skanska USA for the building and construction. An undertaking of this magnitude would be impossible if not for the incredible partnership between these private sector companies and our great public institutions, including the Housing Recovery Office, the NYC Department of Buildings, the NYC Office of Management and Budget and FDNY.
The heroic health care workers of NYC Health + Hospitals/North Central Bronx stand ready in the face of this crisis and continue to rise to the challenge to care for New Yorkers with COVID-19 who continue to need intensive care.
We’re proud to be able to provide these incredibly important services at this critical moment in our city’s history.”
