NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln today announced the launch of a paid internship program for college students interested in a career in healthcare. The Leadership Education Administrative Rotation and Networking (LEARN) Program at Lincoln provides college students with an opportunity to gain valuable skills and hands-on experience in hospital administration. The first cohort of the program began this semester with five students from Lehman College. During their 5-month rotation at the hospital, the students will have the opportunity to work with leadership staff in various departments, including Finance, Hospital Administration, Human Resources and Ambulatory Care.

“As a proud Alumna of Lehman College, I’m happy to launch this internship program with students from Lehman,” said Cristina Contreras, LMSW, MPA, FABC, Chief Executive Officer, NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln. “Too often, unpaid internships have been a barrier to hardworking and talented students and professionals, preventing them from contributing their talents and skills to the workforce and holding them back from career advancement opportunities. I know from experience that this program will help remove barriers to equal opportunity for low-income students, especially from communities like the South Bronx, at the beginnings of their careers.”

“We are proud of this new partnership between the Lehman College School of Business and Lincoln Hospital, and the opportunities it will provide our students to forge successful careers in health care,” said Lehman College President Fernando Delgado. “Paid internships are crucial for our business students, many of whom forgo unpaid internships because they cannot afford to give up their paying jobs while attending college. We look forward to deepening our partnership going forward and adding more students to this pipeline of valuable career preparation.”

“Our School of Business is committed to experiential learning, and this program is an integral part of our strategy to give students a leg-up as they prepare for successful careers,” said Dene Hurley, Dean, Lehman School of Business. “We are happy to partner with Lincoln Hospital to make this program possible and help shape the next generation of healthcare leaders.”

“The Lehman College School of Business new paid internship program with Lincoln Hospital offers an invaluable opportunity for students to immerse themselves in diverse areas of hospital administration and management,” said Alexander Nuñez, Ph.D., Internship Coordinator and Associate Professor, Lehman School of Business. “By rotating through key departments like Finance, Accounting, Human Resource Management and Hospital Operations, students gain a holistic understanding of healthcare management. This real-world experience for which they are also getting academic credits empowers them to develop critical skills and leadership competencies, ensuring they are well-prepared to drive innovation and efficiency in the healthcare sector.”

“Being part of this program has been an incredible opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute to something bigger than myself,” said Samrin Alam, Intern. “The experience has reinforced my belief that giving back to the community not only strengthens those around us but also helps us grow as individuals. This program has allowed me to apply my skills in a meaningful way while preparing me for a future where I can make a lasting impact in the healthcare financial field.”

NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln launched this internship program with the goal of providing college students interested in careers in healthcare with the opportunity to grow their knowledge and determine if they are in the right career field. This internship will not only provide students with the first-hand experience in the real working world but also enable them to understand the career trajectory for their desired job title. The program will partner with colleges, especially in the Bronx, to provide opportunities for students currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate degree program at a college, community college, or university.
