NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County’s Comprehensive Breast Center has enhanced its efforts to prevent lymphedema with the adoption of the ImpediMed SOZO device, a non-invasive technology that can detect breast cancer–related lymphedema before visible swelling occurs. Early identification is critical, as intervention during the earliest stages can help prevent progression to chronic lymphedema and improve long-term outcomes. Each year, more than 310,000 individuals are newly diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States. Studies show that approximately one in five breast cancer patients will experience lymphedema, with up to 82 percent potentially at risk of developing arm lymphedema, depending on their treatment. Lymphedema is a potential complication following breast cancer surgery and radiation therapy. The integration of the SOZO device strengthens the hospital’s Lymphedema Prevention Program and supports ongoing efforts to provide high-quality, patient-centered cancer care.

“The integration of the ImpediMed SOZO device represents an important step forward in how we provide care to our patients at Kings County Hospital,” said Sheldon McLeod, Chief Executive Officer of NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County. “This progress is driven by the skill and commitment of our clinical teams, whose focus on early detection and innovation strengthens the care we provide to our community.”

“At Kings County, we are committed to improving the quality of life for our breast cancer survivors,” said Dr. Rajesh Verma, Chief Medical Officer of NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County. “Adopting the SOZO digital health platform will allow us to move from a reactive approach to a proactive monitoring for lymphedema in our patients. Our goal is to meet the latest NAPBC standards and ensure every patient at risk receives the best possible care to avoid the physical and financial burdens of this disease.”

“We are excited to announce that the Kings County Hospital Comprehensive Breast Center has recently adopted the ImpediMed SOZO device, a cutting-edge technology that utilizes bioimpedance to detect early signs of lymphedema, a condition that can affect patients after breast cancer treatment,” said Dr. Jamie Alberty, Director of the Comprehensive Breast Center at NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County. “With this advanced tool, we are enhancing our Lymphedema Prevention Program and continuing our commitment to providing the best care possible to our community.”
