NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi Receives $660,000 from State for Expansion of Comprehensive Addiction Treatment Center

Jul 24, 2023

Bronx, NY

NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi CEO Christopher Mastromano announced today that his facility’s Comprehensive Addiction Treatment Center (CATC) had been awarded $660,000 by Governor Kathy Hochul, the Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS), and the New York State’s Opioid Settlement Fund. The funds will go towards enhancing Jacobi’s CATC current services which include the Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program, Ancillary Withdrawal Service, by integrating anOpioid Treatment Program. These funds are to eliminate the separation and stigma associated with these separate levels of treatment, by developing a Comprehensive Integrative Program that offers all levels of Medication Assisted Treatment to patients presenting with Opioid Use Disorder.

Tragically, the Bronx has the highest number of residents who have died of a drug overdose, according to the latest available public health records. As such, these funds can be directed towards treatment in the hardest hit communities to help patients in need. According to Mr. Mastromano, these monies will go to expand the following integrated treatment options-

  • Group Therapy.
  • Medication Assisted Treatment and Support Services (suboxone, Vivitrol, Naltrexone) and adding an Opioid Treatment Program track that will offer methadone dosing. Individual Counseling, Supporting Individual Therapy.
  • As needed, support from our behavioral health team including access to the CPEP (Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program).

“The grim reality is that the Bronx is ground zero for the opioid epidemic,” said Mr. Mastromano. “These funds are critical so we can enhance support services for Bronxites who need our care.”

“At Jacobi, we pride ourselves on offering patient-centered, and Trauma-informed care to all of our patients. The patients, who present with Substance Use Disorders, typically present with complex issues that need multiple levels of care. We have historically sought every opportunity to expand our services, and this opportunity was a no-brainer. Opioid Treatment Programs are levels of care that are often separated, and we are excited to begin a new venture of offering this valuable service here are Jacobi,” said Dr. Jantra Coll, Clinical Director of the Comprehensive Addiction Treatment Center’s Outpatient Treatment Program.

“I am thrilled to express my wholehearted support for NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi’s Comprehensive Addiction Treatment Center, which has been awarded $660,000 by Governor Kathy Hochul, OASAS, and the New York State’s Opioid Settlement Fund. This crucial funding will enable the integration of an Opioid Treatment Program and create a Comprehensive Integrative Program, eliminating stigma and offering vital Medication Assisted Treatment to patients with Opioid Use Disorder. Considering the devastating impact of the opioid epidemic in the Bronx, directing these resources towards the hardest-hit communities will be a significant step in providing essential care and support to those in need. Jacobi’s dedication to expanding their treatment options demonstrates their commitment to patient-centered care, and I am honored to stand behind their efforts to combat this crisis,” said State Senator Nathalia Fernandez, Chair of the Committee of Alcoholism & Substance Use Disorders.

“Addiction is not a partisan issue,” said Assemblymember John Zaccaro, Jr. “The Bronx is the epicenter of the opioid crisis in New York State and far too many of our family members, friends, and neighbors continue to struggle without the necessary resources. Today’s incredible announcement that NYC Health & Hospitals / Jacobi Medical Center received more than half a million dollars to expand their Comprehensive Addiction Treatment Center means that we can provide more essential services to help our community free ourselves from the tight grasp of addiction.”

“Tragically, our region of the Bronx has been Ground Zero for the opioid epidemic,” said Assemblymember Michael Benedetto. “Nearly every resident of our community has a friend or family member they’ve lost to addiction. My constituents and I are grateful to Governor Hochul for directing these funds to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi so they can help those in need of treatment. I look forward to working with my colleagues at all levels of government to do more to combat this issue in the future.”

“I want to thank Governor Kathy Hochul for providing these resources to address the scourge of addiction that has greatly impacted The Bronx, particularly our poorer communities throughout the borough,” said New York City Council Member Marjorie Velázquez. “We all must work together, at all levels of governments and with our healthcare partners, to provide Bronxites with the necessary tools to cut the chains of addiction. The funds provided by Governor Hochul will go a long way in helping NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi expand their Comprehensive Addiction Treatment Center and fund the programs to assist Bronx residents battle this disease.”
