NYC Health + Hospitals today announced that two board members from the health care system have been named to City & State’s 2023 Power of Diversity: Latino 100 list. NYC Health + Hospitals Chair of the Board of Directors José A. Pagán, PhD, and NYC Health + Hospitals board member and Chair of the Board of Directors for MetroPlusHealth Sally B. Hernandez-Piñero are recognized for their outstanding leadership, career accomplishments, and steadfast commitment to serving New Yorkers. José A. Pagán, PhD, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Public Health Policy and Management in the School of Global Public Health at New York University. He is also Chair of the Board of Directors of NYC Health + Hospitals, the largest municipal health care system in the United States. Pagán is a health economist who has led research, implementation, and evaluation projects on the redesign of health care delivery and payment systems. Pagán served as Chair of the National Advisory Committee of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Health Policy Research Scholars and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Interdisciplinary Association for Population Health Science and the American Society of Health Economists.
Sally B. Hernandez-Piñero was appointed by Mayor Bill de Blasio to the New York City Health + Hospitals Board of Directors on January 1, 2019; subsequently, Ms. Hernandez-Piñero was appointed Chair of the MetroPlus Health Plan Inc. MetroPlus Health Plan Inc. is a solely owned subsidiary of the New York City Health + Hospitals. Sally Hernandez-Piñero began her career at Bedford-Stuyvesant Community Legal Services as a Staff Attorney and went on to become General Counsel to the State of New York Mortgage Agency and Deputy Borough President of Manhattan. She subsequently joined former Mayor David Dinkins’ Administration as Deputy Mayor for Finance and Economic Development. There, she was involved in all key policy, legislative and budgetary decisions made by the administration. Following her career in the public sector, Mrs. Hernandez-Piñero transitioned into the corporate world, working at Fannie Mae as a Managing Director, as counsel for Kalkines, Arkey, Zall & Bernstein and as Senior Vice President for Corporate Affairs for the Related Companies. She served as a member of the Board of Trustees of Con Edison for 23 years. She also served as Executive Director of City Harvest, before becoming a Hearing Officer at the Office of Administrative Trials and Hearing. Mrs. Hernandez-Piñero graduated cum laude from Wesleyan University and received her J.D. from New York University School of Law.
