NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue and Children of Bellevue Selected as Lowe’s Hometowns Project

The $210K grant will fund renovations to the pediatric inpatient unit and public spaces at Bellevue Hospital

Nov 06, 2025

Lowe’s Red Vest Associates joined staff from Children of Bellevue and Bellevue Hospital for a volunteer day at the hospital. Lowe’s Hometowns awarded Bellevue Hospital $210,000 for renovations to the pediatric inpatient unit and other areas of the hospital.

New York, NY — NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue and Children of Bellevue announced that the hospital has been selected as a Lowe’s Hometowns project, one of 100 community-nominated, large-scale renovations that will revitalize nonprofit and community spaces serving as hubs and heartbeats for hometowns. As a part of Lowe’s commitment to deliver 10 million square feet of impact in communities nationwide, Children of Bellevue and Bellevue Hospital received a $210,000 grant to renovate two crucial areas. The Pediatric inpatient unit will get a welcoming family and teen center alongside a dedicated space for families and staff to meet, featuring updated furniture, child-safe storage, and essential amenities. Additionally, the hospital’s Saul Farber Auditorium will be revitalized with ADA-compliant and modern seating, enhancing its usability for educational and community events and ultimately benefiting thousands each year.

“We are honored that the Lowe’s Hometowns project has selected Bellevue Hospital as a grant recipient for the transformation of critical spaces that provide opportunities for healing and community engagement,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue Chief Executive Officer Dr. Eric Wei. “The grant will help us reimagine how we interact with our patients, their families, and the larger community we serve. We are grateful to Lowe’s for their generosity, and to Children of Bellevue for spearheading this project. For over 75 years, Children of Bellevue has provided critical support to our youngest patients and their families.”

“We are deeply grateful to the Lowe’s Hometowns program for their extraordinary partnership and generosity,” said Children of Bellevue Board Chair Amanda Rosado, Ed.D. “The transformation of our pediatric spaces has created brighter, more welcoming environments that bring comfort and joy to children and families during some of their toughest moments. Thanks to the incredible commitment of Lowe’s volunteers and the support of this grant, families are experiencing care and connection in new and inspiring ways.”

The Lowe’s volunteers and hospital staff painted a mural created by local artist Misha Tyutyunik to be displayed in the pediatric inpatient unit.

To help complete the project, Bellevue Hospital hosted Lowe’s Red Vest associates for a volunteer work day at the hospital. The volunteers worked on a gardening project in the hospital’s First Avenue Garden, and joined staff for a mural painting project, featuring artwork created by local artist Misha Tyutyunik. The finished mural will be displayed in the Pediatrics inpatient unit.

“I wanted to create something that would make my four-year old daughter feel comfortable, safe, hopeful and intrigued if she had to be in the hospital, while also appealing, soothing and nostalgic to me and my partner as parents,” said artist Misha Tyutyunik. “The concept for the murals panels is based around the theme of ‘the journey.’ The panels are designed to appeal to all ages, are interactive and inclusive, encapsulating the ideas from staff and patients in imagery and content, and saturated with colors that are vibrant and uplifting, while remaining grounding and soothing.”

“I’m so proud to be part of a company that truly invests in its local communities,” said Michael J. Markmann, Store Manager at Lowe’s in North Bergen, NJ, who led the volunteer team. “Through the Lowe’s Hometowns program, our team had the opportunity to roll up our sleeves and make a difference right here at home. It was incredibly rewarding to help make the Bellevue Hospital a brighter place for all the local families it serves and its incredibly dedicated staff.”

Volunteers also worked on a gardening project in the hospital’s First Avenue Garden.

With help from Lowe’s red vest associates, across the country, Lowe’s Hometowns projects will help expand kitchen and serving capacity for food pantries, restore dignity to well-used transitional housing facilities, revitalize parks and gardens for neighbors to safely gather and build restorative spaces for first responders to rest between calls.
