NYC Health + Hospitals today announced that as part of Newsweek’s fourth annual “Best Nursing Homes 2023” rankings, it recognized the health care system’s skilled nursing facility NYC Health + Hospitals/Sea View as the top nursing home in the state. Three of the other four facilities were ranked in the top ten; the fifth facility was ranked in the top 42. The rankings are based on four criteria including a performance data score, a reputation score, and a COVID-19 score. This year, Newsweek added a score for facilities accredited by the Joint Commission International, an independent, non-profit health care standards organization which has been accrediting facilities since 1951. The rankings are designed to assist patients and their families in making informed decisions about where to receive their long-term and post-acute care. For the rankings, Newsweek identified 475 top facilities across 25 states, with 42 in New York state.

“Being once again recognized by Newsweek as having some of the best post-acute and long-term care facilities in the state is an incredible honor,” said NYC Health + Hospitals President and CEO Mitchell Katz, MD. “We are extremely proud of our dedicated staff who work so hard every day to provide our patients with the quality of life they deserve.”

“We are grateful for Newsweek’s recognition of being top nursing homes in the state for 2023. NYC Health + Hospitals post-acute care service line has committed staff carrying out the mission of providing high-quality care to the most vulnerable New Yorkers,” said NYC Health + Hospitals Senior Vice President of Post-Acute Care Khoi Luong, DO. “We acknowledge patient and family choice when selecting post-acute and long-term care, and we will continue to work to be their top choice.”

“Receiving the #1 ranking from Newsweek is a tremendous honor and one that we are very proud of. I have always known that our exceptional staff go above and beyond in their care of our residents, even in the most challenging of times. To be recognized as the best performing nursing home in all of New York State is truly incredible and one that fills my heart with a deep sense of pride,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Sea View CEO Matthew D. Levy, MHA, LNHA. “Congratulations to the NYC Health + Hospitals/Sea View team, the Staten Island community, Greater New York area, and for everyone that contributed to make such a wonderful achievement possible.”

Facilities recognized as best nursing homes in New York State include:

“It is a great honor that Carter has earned the #4 ranking on Newsweek’s list of ‘Best Nursing Homes’ out of over 600 nursing homes in New York State. This year’s ranking is our best to date which demonstrates our commitment of excellence in the provision of quality post-acute care services,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Carter CEO Floyd R. Long. “This would not have been possible without our staff embracing the ICARE values and embracing a culture of patient safety. It is our plan to continue to improve our performance and remain a high-performing organization as we play a vital role in the NYC Health + Hospitals mission.”

“Coler’s strong ranking by Newsweek year-over-year is a testament to the high consistent quality of person-centered cared delivered by the Coler team every day,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Coler CEO Stephen Catullo, MBA

“It’s an honor to be recognized among the best nursing homes in New York State,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Gouverneur CEO Susan Sales, MPA, FACHE, LNHA. “The recognition confirms that our staff provides our residents with the best possible care each day.”

NYC Health + Hospitals currently has about 1,600 occupied beds in its post-acute long-term care facilities. Patients in this group come from all over New York City, and range in ages from 18 to over 100.

NYC Health + Hospitals/Carter, Gouverneur, and Sea View earned a five-star CMS rating, which designates them among the top 10 percent of skilled nursing facilities in the country. Additionally, NYC Health + Hospitals/Carter, Coler, Gouverneur, and Seaview are ranked in the top 1st quintile in the New York State Department of Health (NYS DOH) Nursing Home Quality Pool. Results in the NYS DOH ranking are based on quality measures, compliance and potentially avoidable hospitalizations in the long-term care population.
