NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island Receives $250K in Funding for Neurological and Cardiac Medical Equipment
NYS Assembly Member Mathylde Frontus secured $250,000 in capital funding
from the State and Municipal Facilities Program
New medical equipment acquired with funding will diagnose and treat neurological and cardiac disorders, as well expedite the processing of special stains for pathology.

NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island today announced it has received $250,000 in capital funding for neurological and cardiac medical equipment. The funding was secured by New York State Assembly Member Mathylde Frontus from the State and Municipal Facilities Program. The funding will help the hospital purchase an electroencephalogram (EEG) machine and a portable echocardiogram that will allow the hospital’s neurology and cardiology departments diagnose disorders with more accuracy and speed. The funding will also go towards a new Artisan Pro Link Special Staining System that will allow the pathology department to expedite the processing of special stains, which allows the presence or absence of certain cell types, structures and/or microorganisms to be viewed microscopically. The new funding secured by Assembly Member Frontus builds on NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island’s commitment to high-quality, comprehensive care for all South Brooklyn patients.

And our pathology lab will now have state-of-the-art equipment to expedite their special stains.”

An EEG is an important tool in a neurologist’s arsenal that measures and records electrical activity in the brain. This test can help to diagnose and/or identify treatments for seizure disorders, stroke, sleep disorders and other brain damage/dysfunction. The portable echocardiogram machine for our cardiac care unit, will allow providers to evaluate the flow of blood through the heart and to see the effect of treatment on the valves and chambers of the heart. And, an Artisan Link Pro Special Staining System will allow providers to streamline the processing of special stains, which are currently done manually. With the new equipment, the quality of the stains will be more consistent, reliable, and independent of the technologist performing the test. Additionally, the instrument affords us the opportunity to potentially do some of the stains in-house, which offers uniformity and consistency of the quality of the stains.

In 2019, Coney Island Hospital performed over 5,000 echocardiograms and 3,000 electroencephalograms, and with the acquisition of these critical medical equipment, even more lives will be saved.
