NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island Receives $2.6M in Capital Funding for Robotic Surgical Equipment

NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island today announced it has received $2.6 million in FY21 capital funding for a state-of-the-art robotic surgical system thanks to the support of NYC Council Speaker Corey Johnson, and the advocacy of Councilmember Mark Treyger, Co-Chair of the Brooklyn Delegation. The addition of the robotic system, which is designed to further advance the technology used in minimally invasive surgery, builds on the hospital’s greater strategic vision of enhancing its surgical, inpatient and ambulatory care departments to further improved patient experience. The surgical system can be used across a spectrum of minimally invasive procedures and has been optimized for a large number of surgeries in the areas of gynecology, urology, thoracic, colorectal and general surgery.

“We are very excited to be able to offer minimally invasive robotic surgery to our patients right here in South Brooklyn,” said Chief of Urology at NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island Abdo Kabarriti, MD. “The ability to offer robotic surgery is a game changer for our patients who stand to benefit from this state-of-the-art technology, through smaller incisions, a decrease in blood loss and transfusions, less postoperative pain, smaller scars, and a quicker recovery to normal activities.”
The capital funding will be allocated specifically to acquire the Da Vinci surgery robotic assisted surgery system that will allow surgeons to experience a wider range and complete control during laparoscopic surgeries, transforming hand movements into smaller, more precise movements. Additional features of the equipment provide surgeons with a highly magnified view, virtually extending their eyes and hands into the patient, while reducing blood loss and recovery time, as well as keeping incisions and scars minimal.

The robotic technique will apply to a number of surgical specialties. Among general surgery, urological and gynecological surgery, NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island estimates that the new equipment will be applied in approximately 300 surgeries in the first year alone.
