NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island Receives $17 Million to Rebuild, Expand Primary and Preventive Care Services for South Brooklyn Community
Mayor de Blasio, NYC Council Members Treyger and Johnson, and Brooklyn Borough President Adams secured capital construction funds Ambulatory care building modernization is part of future NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health campus project featuring the new Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hospital

NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island today announced plans to rebuild and expand outpatient and preventive health services for the South Brooklyn community, thanks to more than $17 million in capital funding from Mayor de Blasio, the City Council, and Brooklyn Borough President. The funds will support the modernization of wellness and outpatient primary care clinics to improve the health of New Yorkers with diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and other common health conditions. The renovated ambulatory care space is part of the future NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health campus modernization featuring the new Ruth Bader Ginsburg hospital opening in 2022.

The $17 million capital investments will fund the renovation of 26,000-square-feet of ambulatory care space, including more than 50 exam rooms for primary care services, and an upgraded ambulatory radiology suite. Mayor de Blasio is allocating $15.5 million of the funding, which was secured through the strong advocacy of NYC Council Member Mark Treyger on behalf of the hospital. The remaining $1.7 million was provided by Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams at $500,000, and NYC Council Speaker Corey Johnson at $1.2 million.

Work on these spaces is expected to begin once the current emergency department in the hospital’s main building moves to the new inpatient hospital in summer 2022.
On August 5, NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island announced a milestone in its transformation with the renaming of its hospital campus. The facility will be renamed as NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health, and its new 11-story hospital building and the existing Tower building within the renovated campus will be jointly named after United States Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The new names will be effective in the summer of 2022, when the new building opens.

A 2019 community needs assessment showed that patients were coming to NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island for routine well and preventative care, hypertension, diabetes mellitus complications, among other chronic health care needs. With the renovation of space in the current hospital building, more patients will be able to address all their non-emergent and diagnostic imaging health care needs on the campus.
Between 2018 and 2020, NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island had over 718,000 ambulatory care visits. During that same period, the hospital saw over 72,000 outpatient diagnostic radiology visits.
