New York, NY — NYC Health + Hospitals today announced that NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull CEO Gregory Calliste, NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health CEO Svetlana Lipyanskaya, MPA, and NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County CEO Sheldon McLeod were recognized by City & State New York in their “Brooklyn Power 100” list for 2024. The annual recognition list highlights accomplished leaders across a range of industries with significant political influence who have shaped the lives of New Yorkers in Brooklyn and beyond. City & State is the premier media organization dedicated to covering New York’s local and state politics and policy.

“To be listed among the 2024 Brooklyn Power 100 by City and State New York is an honor for me and the entire NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull team. This recognition underscores our commitment to advancing health care excellence in North Brooklyn, and we are grateful for the opportunity to serve our community with compassion and dedication,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull CEO Gregory Calliste.

“It is an honor to once again be recognized with my fellow Brooklyn CEOs on City & State New York’s Brooklyn Power 100 list,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health CEO Svetlana Lipyanskaya. “And while I’m the one being highlighted, it’s truly the caring doctors, nurses, and staff at South Brooklyn Health who deserve the recognition.”

Gregory Calliste has been the CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull since 2016 and has made significant improvements in patient care, patient, staff and community satisfaction, and fiscal viability. Calliste has been instrumental in acquiring financial resources for NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull to upgrade medical equipment and the physical plant. Under his leadership, the facility succeeded during the Covid-19 pandemic and also during the flooding disaster last year when all patients were evacuated, ensuring that patients and staff were safe and that the hospital operations were restored expeditiously. Previous hospital leadership positions include CEO of North Central Bronx Hospital, Chief Administrative Officer/SVP at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital/Continuum Health Partners/Mt. Sinai Health, President/CEO of Juan F. Luis Hospital, CEO of New Orleans General Hospital, and Deputy Executive Director at Kings County Hospital. Mr. Calliste has been recognized for his leadership by City and State’s Brooklyn Power 50/100 list for the past six years, Crain’s Notable in Healthcare, Schneps Media Healthcare Hero, Brooklyn Eagle Black History Month Champion, and more.

Svetlana Lipyanskaya, MPA, FACHE is the first woman to lead the executive team at NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health, guiding the hospital through COVID-19 testing and vaccination programs, and post-pandemic recovery.  At the same time, she drove the effort to complete and open a new inpatient hospital facility ensuring that patients have access to the care they need regardless of future environmental challenges.  Svetlana has collaborated with government officials to secure funding for vital infrastructure projects in an ongoing effort to improve access to critical lifesaving services within her community.  She is focusing her strategic plan on the development of a comprehensive medical and behavioral ambulatory services program for South Brooklyn Health, embodying the NYC Health + Hospitals mission to empower all New Yorkers to lead their healthiest lives. Lipyanskaya was recognized in City and State’s Brooklyn Power 100, was named by Becker’s Hospital Review as a Community Hospital CEO to Know and was highlighted by PoliticsNY as a 2023 Power Player in Healthcare.  In 2023, she was also recognized on the NY State Assembly floor for her efforts in the healthcare sector, and became a member of the Healthcare Association of New York State Board of Directors.

Sheldon P. McLeod was appointed CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County in January 2018, having previously served as COO since October 2014. As CEO, McLeod’s responsibilities include setting the strategic direction for the hospital and providing executive oversight for the clinical, operational and financial management of the institution. Under McLeod’s leadership, Kings County continues to excel in the Brooklyn health care landscape having developed innovative, cost-effective solutions for enhancing quality, competitiveness and revenue by implementing new business strategies. McLeod also works collaboratively with community-based organizations to address the social determinants of health, and health equity in the communities served by NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County.
