Becker’s Healthcare Recognizes Two Leaders From NYC Health + Hospitals on 2026 Chief Medical Officers to Know List

NYC Health + Hospitals announced that NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan Chief Medical Officer Dr. Anitha Srinivasan and NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue Chief Medical Officer Dr. Amit Uppal have been named to Becker’s Healthcare 2026 Hospital and Health System Chief Medical Officers to Know list. Becker’s list puts a spotlight on 252 physician executives who are instrumental in elevating patient safety, upholding rigorous quality standards, strengthening collaboration between executive leadership and medical staff, and guiding risk management efforts, including high-ranking elected officials, high-powered health care executives and effective advocates.

As Chief Medical Officer of Metropolitan Hospital, a 338-bed acute care facility within the NYC Health + Hospitals system, Dr. Srinivasan provides executive leadership for all clinical operations and medical staff, overseeing more than 300 attending physicians across 18 departments. Her portfolio includes clinical quality, patient safety, risk management, infection prevention, credentialing and medical staff performance evaluation. She also leads graduate medical education in partnership with academic affiliates including New York Medical College, Columbia University, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and CUNY with 26 residency and fellowship programs serving 408 residents and fellows. She directs operational initiatives spanning perioperative services, specialty care expansion and digital transformation through Epic electronic health record implementation, and she leads strategic planning for capital projects such as emergency department and operating room modernization. She founded the nationally accredited breast health center in 2017 and drove operational gains including doubling surgical productivity through perioperative redesign, block optimization and workflow standardization, alongside expanding minimally invasive, robotic and advanced surgical procedures. She has led major capital projects totaling $130 million and directed crisis response efforts including pandemic surge capacity, staffing redeployment, and asylum seeker and refugee healthcare. Dr. Srinivasan is deeply committed to advancing health equity through operational efficiency and financial stewardship. She is a strong advocate for the ethical and pragmatic integration of artificial intelligence in medicine. She is the first woman to be Chief Medical Officer at Metropolitan Hospital.

Dr. Amit Uppal currently serves as Chief Medical Officer at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, the nation’s oldest hospital. Dr. Uppal is responsible for overseeing all clinical operations and ensuring the delivery of safe, high quality, and equitable care across Bellevue Hospital. His scope includes capacity management, bed flow, clinical quality, incident response, and the strategic planning and development of clinical services to meet the evolving needs of New York City’s diverse patient population. Dr. Uppal has served his entire medical career at Bellevue Hospital, arriving as a trainee in 2008. Throughout his time at Bellevue Hospital, Dr. Uppal has focused on clinical improvement efforts such as improving early detection and management of sepsis, improving airway safety, and expanding critical care capacity. He has also played a key role when the hospital has faced emergencies such as Superstorm Sandy in 2012, the response to the Ebola outbreak in 2014, and the COVID pandemic in 2020. Under his leadership, the Quality Department has flourished and expanded its impact on hospital operations, including regulatory certifications, quality assurance, performance improvement, incident management, and staff wellness. He continues to care for patients in the ICU and is a member of the Special Pathogens Team at Bellevue Hospital. Dr. Uppal is also an Associate Professor at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine and a member of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, & Sleep Medicine.
