The DAISY Award, sponsored by the DAISY Foundation, is the international leader in nurse recognition. As part of its 2nd Annual Post-Acute Care DAISY Awards, NYC Health + Hospitals honored 10 extraordinary nurses across the health system’s five long-term care facilities. The honorees’ nominations, submitted by residents, families, and staff, were inspiring stories exemplifying what it means to be a compassionate nurse. The Post-Acute Care (PAC) nurses selected for the recognition demonstrate an unparalleled commitment to providing our residents with quality, safe, and dignified care.
“Nurses who choose a path in long-term care build a vital connection to patients leaving our hospitals in search of healing and regaining their independence,” said NYC Health + Hospitals Senior Vice President of Post-Acute Care Khoi Luong, DO. “From helping our residents restore lost functions after a stroke or an accident to providing cognitive support in our memory care units, these nursing trailblazers embody the values of integrity and compassion that promote our residents’ ability to thrive.”
“NYC Health + Hospitals has a valuable ongoing and growing partnership with The DAISY Foundation, which has distributed more than 100 of its “DAISY Awards For Extraordinary Nurses” to nurses at our facilities over the past three years,” said NYC Health + Hospitals Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Executive Natalia Cineas, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN. “It gives me great pleasure to celebrate and support our nurses who are being recognized with DAISY Awards for going above and beyond in caring for patients and families in their most vulnerable moments. Our nurses have proven time and again that they serve with distinction, dedication and leadership, epitomizing the true mission, vision and values of our public healthcare system.”
“Each DAISY Award recipient embodies the spirit of compassionate care, showcasing a dedication that goes beyond duty. Their exceptional service reminds us that the heart of healthcare is indeed the heart itself. In our city, where every moment counts, these remarkable nurses pause to touch lives in the most meaningful ways,” said New York City Council Member Mercedes Narcisse. “Their resilience, empathy, and commitment are pillars of strength in our communities. As a fellow nurse, I understand the depth of their dedication and the countless sacrifices they make. As our city faces unprecedented challenges, it is these heroes who rise to the occasion, extending a hand of hope and healing. I congratulate these outstanding individuals who elevate the very essence of nursing every single day.
“Post-Acute Care nurse recipients of the DAISY Award represent the pinnacle of the nursing profession. These nurses embrace compassion as a guiding force in their nursing practice,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Post-Acute Care – Chief Nursing Officer, Marian McNamara, RN, MSN. “They possess great compassion which is a trait that cannot be learned but rather an element that comes from deep within their hearts, and our nurses are the embodiment of this.”
This award recognizes individual nurses or nurse-led care teams, who go above and beyond in caring for patients and residents. These nurses work collaboratively with their interdisciplinary care teams to ensure the best health outcomes for their residents, working in various post-acute care areas including short-term rehab, long-term care and specialized units like memory care.

The DAISY Foundation was created in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died at age 33 of complications of an auto-immune disease (hence the name, an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.)
