Jun 20, 2024

NYC Health + Hospitals today announced that NYC Health + Hospitals’ President and CEO Dr. Mitchell Katz and MetroPlusHealth’s Deputy Chief Marketing Officer Ken Louie have been named to the PoliticsNY, amNY Metro, and Gay City News “2024 LGBTQ+ Power Players” recognition list. Both are honored as trailblazing leaders who serve as inspiration for the LGBTQ+ community, and whose impressive achievements shape the lives of countless individuals in New York City and beyond. From leading the Health System through the COVID-19 crisis to helping hundreds of New Yorkers secure permanent housing, and expanding outreach to support individuals experiencing homelessness, Dr. Katz has championed the needs of the most vulnerable New Yorkers. A trained social worker turned marketer, Louie completed the first significant rebrand of MetroPlusHealth and is passionate about inspiring the next generation to care about their health. The 2024 LGBTQ+ Power Players list launched in 2022, and is part of a monthly series by PoliticsNY and amNY Metro on New York’s ‘Power Players’, including business executives, educators, government affairs experts, and nonprofit directors.

Mitchell Katz, MD, is President and Chief Executive Officer of NYC Health + Hospitals. Dr. Katz has led the health system through the COVID-19 crisis, housed 350 persons into permanent housing, overseen the adoption of a modern electronic health record system, increased the number of nurse positions, developed a modern ambulance transport system, and expanded outreach to support homeless New Yorkers. He also led the financial turn-around of the health system by eliminating the deficit through enrolling more New Yorkers into health insurance and appropriately billing insurance plans. Previously, he served as the Director of the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services. Before he came to Los Angeles, Dr. Katz served as director and health officer of the San Francisco Department of Health for 13 years. He is a graduate of Yale College and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Katz also practices as a primary care physician.

Ken Louie is Deputy Chief Marketing and Brand Officer for MetroPlusHealth. He helped guide two health care brands during COVID: Optum Care, part of UnitedHealthcare and MetroPlusHealth, part of NYC Health + Hospitals. Ken joined MetroPlusHealth as the Head of Brand Marketing and Corporate Communications, in August 2021. He is responsible for developing and executing marketing strategies to increase brand awareness and growth. As the city’s health care plan, he completed the first significant rebrand of the 35-year-old organization. Trained social worker turned marketer, he has helped many brands transform such as TIAA, Nuveen, BNY Mellon and MetLife.
