Excellence in Clinical Nursing

Diligence and kindness go hand-in-hand for Oksoon Kim, who has spent her 17-year nursing career putting the needs of her patients first.

“I want the patients and families to trust in our nursing team, so they feel safe, supported, and confident in their care,” Kim explains. “That bond leads to better patient satisfaction and better outcomes.”

Currently serving as a staff nurse NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health, Sydenham, Kim prides herself on her “kindness, caring and fairness and problem-solving skills,” as well as being an “independent woman.”

“I feel it is my duty to serve underserved community populations.”

In embracing the mission of public health, she is committed to the health care and well-being of all New York City residents regardless of age, race, gender and social status. This offers an equal opportunity to everyone to access the wide range of health care services we provide to keep our patients healthy; we are addressing all of their needs for medical services.”

Kim says her nursing principles revolve around accountability and autonomy. “There should be no barriers to assessing health services,” she declares.

Kim says one of her goals is continuing to adapt to changes in the modern health care environment, which is creating a “demand for more primary care capacity. Nursing care will be tested or performed in a variety of ways, including responding to an aging population that has more complex needs; nurses will need to act as a bridge to health care.” Receiving the system’s Excellence in Clinical Nursing Award is a high point in her nursing career, according to Kim, who calls it “a great honor being selected” and “the best moment in nursing.”
