Excellence in Clinical Nursing
Family has always been important to Mary Ann Pagtalunan, and she extends the same care and compassion to her patients, many of whom are older adults.
“Growing up in a family-oriented environment, treating elders with a high degree of respect is an everyday practice,” she points out. “This attitude is always with me, as I care for my residents; I treat them like my family.”
Pagtalunan currently works as a staff nurse at NYC Health + Hospitals/Seaview, and was an LPN for five years before becoming an RN a year ago. “Taking care of our residents with love and compassion and treating them like our own family brings joy and fulfillment,” she comments.
“I want residents and families to be comfortable that they will get the best and most honest care from us.”Mary Ann Pagtalunan, Staff Nurse
Natural curiosity and a love of learning inspired Pagtalunan to pursue a nursing career. “Having a family member that was very sick and required months of treatment made me realize that I wanted to understand science, how our body works and what preventative treatments can keep people from getting sick,” she recalls, noting that rehabilitation and treatment have been the most rewarding times of her career.
“The best moment I’ve experienced in nursing was witnessing a ventilated resident rehabilitate back to their independence,” she recalls. “It is so rewarding to be part of the team that help residents regain their strength and be able to go back to their way of life.”
Looking to the future, Pagtalunan sees medical technologies helping to improve patient care. “I see more improvement in terms of technology that I believe that will help us provide more efficient care,” she predicts, adding, “Nurses must be willing to learn new skills and be able to adapt to future changes.”
“I want my residents to feel safe and cared for, and to know that I am here to listen to their concern and address questions they may have,” she says.
