Excellence in Clinical Nursing
For Jerry Brown, working with patients in their own homes is a privilege and a joy.
“I have worked in a number of different medical settings, but some of my best moments in my nursing career have been experienced in home health care,” he remarks. “I work in an under-resourced, multi-ethnic, resilient community and have found it a privilege to provide nursing care in a person’s own environment, observing firsthand how prioritizing health is essential to improving quality of life. The smiles, gratitude and increased health literacy are the basis of the best moments in my nursing career.”
Growing up on a family farm in segregated Brunswick County, VA, Brown was inspired to embark upon his 31-year nursing journey by his mother, Marie Brown, who was active in their community in spite of not having completed elementary school. “My mother was known for bringing food to the elderly, lending a listening ear to the homebound, and sharing a home remedy with the sick; always with a quick wit and a little advice,” Brown recalls, adding that going along with his mother taught him the importance of community, equity, caring, good physical and mental health, and service.
“Our patients and their families are deserving of our excellence and each day I make outstanding patient care a goal.”Jerry Brown, Community Care Head Nurse
Brown is currently Community Care Head Nurse at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst and going to school to get his Bachelor of Nursing degree. “Pursuing a professional degree was a long-held dream as a child of parents who did not complete high school,” he points out. “Going as far as I can with my education and my commitment to nursing is a way to honor my mother’s legacy and contribute to the community.
“As a returning student, I am expanding my knowledge around healthcare’s increasing use and reliance on technology,” Brown continues, explaining that he sees healthcare technology as being especially important to serving an aging population. “The use of technology can improve access to services, promote independence, and increase patient safety.”
“I approach patient care as a clinically skilled nurse that prioritizes collaboration, advocacy, and teaching to promote treatment compliance and patient ‘buy in,’” he adds. “This can promote good health outcomes and encourage patient participation in their own care. I hope to communicate that self-care is an expression of self-love; an integral step towards healing. I hope that they feel seen, heard and valued.”
