Excellence in Clinical Nursing
Arielle Tapia, a Staff Nurse at NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health, Vanderbilt, believes using time wisely can make a tremendous difference in the patient experience.
“I have noticed just taking a minute to sit there with the patient and lend an ear to hear their concerns, and acknowledging them, goes such a long way,” she relates. “Working in ambulatory care, you tend to sometimes get into a routine, but I try to take a moment before entering a patient’s room to reset, and really be present with the patient. I make sure every patient feels heard and seen.”
Tapia was inspired to embark upon her six-year nursing career by seeing a young cousin being treated for seizures. “It was a fearful time, but it was the nurse’s attention to detail and genuine concern that really stuck out to me and inspired me to want to be that person for patients and their families,” she says.
“I believe what makes a great nurse is compassion, empathy, accountability and altruism; I always try to put myself in the shoes of the patients and their families.”Arielle Tapia, Staff Nurse
“I hope the patients and their families will feel seen and have the confidence, comfort and knowledge to become self-motivated in optimizing their own health, as well as feeling they can reach out if they need additional support.”
“The majority of our patients come to the office during their most vulnerable states. Some patients leave the office awaiting results or not having a definitive answer or diagnosis immediately, but if you show compassion to their frustrations or concerns, they leave the office equally as satisfied.”
Colleagues praise Tapia for her responsiveness, patient advocacy and teamwork. “Arielle Tapia is one of these few special nurses who goes above and beyond to allow the excellent care of our patients,” says one colleague.
Tapia herself says excellence is a team effort. “I would not be able to excel in nursing without the support of the team,” she declares. “Nursing excellence embodies integrity and advocacy. In the community we serve, many of our patients aren’t well educated in the health care system. Becoming an advocate for them while simultaneously educating and empowering is something I try to implement on a daily basis.
“One of our main objectives is to get patients to become more involved in their own care and we are constantly trying to produce techniques and technology that will make it more accessible to patients,” she adds. “The nursing profession is always evolving, that is one of the reasons many people are drawn to the career, including myself. Nursing is a very rewarding profession and I love what I do.”
