“If I get another opportunity in a future life, I would still want to be a nurse.”
As a pediatric nurse in the South Bronx, Silvia Romero finds it immensely rewarding to be able to make a difference in the lives of children.
“Over the past many years, I have touched the lives of many kids and parents,” she says.
“I feel happy and satisfied that I am able to help them, guide them and see that they feel better. The best moment is when parents come back and say thank you to me. The other day, I had a patient who had seizures. The family came back and said, ‘Thank you, you saved the life of my child.’ It was a very emotional moment.”
Working at NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health, Belvis, Romero said that it can be difficult to see children suffering. “One of the biggest challenges I have seen is when kids come into the clinic with depression,” she says. “We have to do all the assessments, coordinate with social workers, parents and help those kids deal with depression – it can be really tough. Then during COVID-19, we had limited access to kids and their parents, which made it even more difficult. But it is important to keep following up with them.”
Romero has wanted to be a nurse since high school and started working for NYC Health + Hospitals as a clerk and subsequently as an LPN to pursue her nursing career. Her goals include furthering her education. “I want to get certified in ambulatory care nursing,” she says. “Also, as I deal with many kids suffering from asthma, I want to become asthma-nursing-certified.”
Providing wellness information and education to children and their parents is vital to helping families live healthier lives. “I advise them to be healthy,” Romero says. “This is ambulatory care, so pediatric vaccine education, counseling and education are all important in the growth and development of the children. Parents need to be mindful of helping their children grow.”
