“In order to direct the future of the nursing profession, we need to continue to be part of the voice that will drive the changes.”
Keenfan Rebecca Sze believes that nursing is integral to the health of the community, and she has spent her 40-year nursing career being a catalyst for positive change.
“A healthy community is built on a platform of excellent nursing care,” she asserts. “Nurses play pivotal roles as caregivers for the whole family and address the social determinant of health to expedite the well-being of patients and their families. As an immigrant, I believe that affordable health care is a right and excellent nursing care affects the well-being of the nation.”
Sze started her career as a nurse’s aide while completing her bachelor’s degree at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center; she earned her Masters of Public Administration at New York University’s Wagner School of Public Health, and subsequently received her Master’s degree and Family Nurse Practitioner advanced practice certification, holding a variety of leadership and supervisory roles.
Sze is one of the founders of the annual Women’s Health Symposium, where cutting-edge health care education and strategy is shared with the community, and has also managed more than 20 competitive funding grants to support underserved Chinese American women and families.
“We have been able to raise awareness by reaching out to the community on contraceptive management, cancer prevention, STD/HIV prevention, depression and domestic violence prevention,” she says, crediting her team with sharing a, “distinctive vision with outstanding passion and daring to take on new challenges and not being afraid to fail.”
