“I started my first job as a nurse at Elmhurst in the psychiatry department. Since my time here, I have learned and grown as person and as a nurse.”
As a psychiatry nurse at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, Justin Yi has seen how nurses can transform lives.
“Patients in the behavioral health units are going through internal pains and problems that do not have simple solutions,” Yi says. “You see people at their most vulnerable, with extreme emotions. One of the easiest things we can do to promote healing is remain composed when patients are demanding a lot from you.
“I decided to pursue nursing because I wanted to help others and go home with a feeling of satisfaction that I made someone’s day better. People will always have health issues that need help. I felt that I could have a positive impact to others and the community. The best moments in my nursing career have been when I see previous patients in the community and they recognize how I have helped them and to see how much they have improved.”
Yi attended Borough of Manhattan Community College and performed his clinical rotations at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst – joining the psychiatric unit after he received his associate’s degree. He earned his bachelor of nursing degree from Capella University and completed NYC Health + Hospitals’ Nurse Residency Program. He is currently working on his master’s degree to become a psychiatric nurse practitioner.
