Internal Medicine Residency Program

The Internal Medicine Residency Program offers a 3-year categorical clinical track set in a 457-bed community hospital affiliated with Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Our training program aims to ensure our residents become well-rounded professionals with a firm grounding in evidence-based medical practice, both in an inpatient and outpatient setting.

As we believe exposure and experience are essential for the effective development of practical clinical judgment, decision-making capabilities, and autonomy, in our program, PGY-1 residents are considered the patient’s primary physician and decision maker.

Under a PGY-2 or PGY-3 residents’ supervision, the PGY-1 residents form an assessment, plan, write orders, and communicate to consulting colleagues. In order to foster autonomy, as time progresses, tailored to the resident, the supervision decreases until a satisfactory level of independence is achieved. We nurture a strong tradition of periodic actionable feedback to help our residents grow effectively.

As the PGY-1 residents gradually progress to PGY-2 and subsequent PGY-3 years of training, their duties transition more towards a supervising role; however, some rotations include immediate and direct patient care to assure continuous growth in clinical medicine.

Evidence-based medicine is at the core of values at the NCB Internal Medicine Residency program. Our program is focused on open and leveled discussion and fosters intellectual dialogue and growth during rounds and conferences.

The program ensures that every resident completes a quality improvement (QI) project. Trainees are actively encouraged to pursue academic research endeavors at NYC Health + Hospitals/North Central Bronx, Jacobi and the Montefiore system.

Caring for primarily an underserved patient population at NYC health + Hospitals/North Central Bronx and Jacobi, there is a strong emphasis on a compassionate approach to patients and effective interdisciplinary communication and coordination. We strongly believe that encompassing all these elements together, along with strong support of our residents’ personal dreams and ambitions, is an integral part of assuring residents graduate as well-prepared and well-rounded professionals in all aspects of general internal medicine.

NYC Health + Hospitals/North Central Bronx has a strong track record of residents graduating with a 95% board rate and consistently securing competitive fellowship positions at prestigious institutions.
