Medical Opportunities for Students and Aspiring Inclusive Clinicians (MOSAIC)
NYC Health + Hospitals is the nation’s largest public health care system, dedicated to providing the highest quality health care services to over one million New Yorkers a year regardless of their ability to pay. Our System is committed to a physician workforce that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve.
Launched in 2021, MOSAIC is a suite of interventions aimed to help students and trainees from underrepresented backgrounds gain clinical and experiential opportunities at NYC Health + Hospitals (H+H). The MOSAIC initiative was named after David Dinkins, the first Black Mayor of NYC, who said “New York is not a melting pot but a gorgeous mosaic… of race and religious faith, of national origin and sexual orientation.” Research has consistently shown that patients have better health outcomes and higher satisfaction with care when their physicians are from similar backgrounds.
Our goals are to expand NYC Health + Hospitals’ physician workforce by:
- Creating a pool of competitive candidates from underrepresented backgrounds who are interested in medicine
- Building necessary skills and training, beginning early in their medical career
- Offering support and resources for medical school matriculation and beyond
- Recruiting medical students with the opportunity to participate in clinical rotations at NYC H+H
The programs include the following, and are expected to continue expand over the coming years:
- MOSAIC Visiting Scholars Program – elective rotations at NYC H+H for medical students and residents from underrepresented backgrounds to reflect the patient populations we serve and for those who are committed to providing care to underserved communities
- Career Day & Hospital Youth Academy – programs for middle school and high school students in New York City who are interested in careers in science and medicine
