Gender Affirming Care
At Metropolitan, our dedicated care teams are here to support you with compassion, expert guidance, and community—every step of the way.
Top Surgery
Metropolitan offers gender-affirming top surgery for transgender and gender non-conforming patients who meet eligibility criteria set by their insurance and health care providers.
“Top surgery” refers to chest surgery as part of gender affirmation. Feminizing top surgery typically involves breast augmentation or implants, while masculinizing top surgery generally involves mastectomy (removal of breast tissue).
Required Documentation
Our care team will help you gather the documents most insurance plans in New York State require:
- A letter of support from a mental health provider (psychiatrist, psychologist, psychiatric nurse practitioner, or licensed clinical social worker) who knows you well.
- A second letter from a qualified mental health or medical provider who has assessed your need for surgery. This person can be a Metropolitan provider.
- A support letter from a Metropolitan psychiatrist. This may replace or supplement the second letter.
Additional Documentation May Include:
- Proof of at least 2 years of hormone therapy.
- For Breast Augmentation: Documentation showing little or no breast growth with hormone replacement therapy.
At least one letter should be brought to your initial consultation.
