About Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery
Obesity, or weighing significantly more than your “ideal” body weight based on your height (BMI over 30 kg/m2), is a major health problem across the United States.
Obesity greatly increases your risk for many related health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease (heart attacks), breathing problems, sleep apnea, cancer, strokes, joint pain and arthritis, and acid reflux.
While diet and exercise play an important role, they are not enough in severe obesity. Bariatric Surgery is a procedure that changes the stomach to reduce how much you can eat at one time. The surgery also reduces appetite and hunger while increasing feelings of “fullness.” Bariatric surgery is the most effective method of sustainable long-term weight loss compared to non-surgical methods like medications, diet and exercise.
Bariatric Surgery and Your Health
Bariatric surgery significantly improves most related health problems, especially diabetes. For some patients, these health problems go away completely. For almost all patients, the number of daily medications they need is greatly reduced. For example, up to 80% of patients can expect their diabetes to resolve after surgery. Surgery also decreases or eliminates the use of insulin in many patients, and reduces complications from diabetes. Most people are able to decrease or stop taking high blood pressure medication after bariatric surgery. Surgery also reduces the risk of dying from heart disease.

Who Can Get Bariatric Surgery
You may be eligible for bariatric surgery if:
You are unable to maintain a healthy weight despite previous weight loss efforts PLUS one of the following:
You weigh 100 pounds or more over your ideal body weight
Your body mass index (BMI, is at least 40 (BMI calculator);
OR
Your BMI is at least 35, but you also have medical problems related to obesity, such as high blood pressure, sleep apnea, or diabetes.
At the time of your initial clinic visit, we will calculate your ideal weight, your BMI, and also review your medical and surgical history to make sure bariatric surgery is safe and right for you. Even patients with many medical conditions can often safely undergo successful weight loss surgery—and those illnesses often get better after surgery.
