History
NYC Health + Hospitals/Gouverneur opened its doors as a community hospital in 1885 in an abandoned police station on the Lower East Side. It served as an emergency hospital and ambulance station for the waterfront community with one visiting physician and surgeon, one consulting surgeon, and a three-member house staff. Through the years, Gouverneur was on the forefront providing needed care.
Gouverneur moved to its present location in 1972 and added a skilled nursing facility in 1976. The facility has always been in tune with the needs of the diverse population in the neighborhood, reaching out to the large Asian population in Cantonese, Mandarin, and Vietnamese, and the large Hispanic populations in Spanish. In the last few years, we have developed programs to focus on patient education and wellness with an emphasis on healthy lifestyles through our primary care practice, NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health, Gouverneur.
