Clinical Leadership Fellows 2023 – 2024

Thea Belay, MD

Thea Belay, MD is a 2023-2024 NYC Health + Hospitals Clinical Leadership Fellow in the Office of Medical & Professional Affairs. She will conduct her clinical practice at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. Prior to fellowship, Dr. Belay completed her pediatrics residency at Kravis Children’s Hospital of Mount Sinai on the Human Rights and Social Justice Leadership Track. She was a representative on the Mt. Sinai Graduate Medical Education Diversity Committee as well as serving as Diversity Recruitment Chair of the pediatric residency.

Dr. Belay earned her MD at the Alpert Medical School at Brown University and her BA at Brown University in Anthropology.

Delia Shen, MD

Delia Shen, MD is a 2023-2024 NYC Health + Hospitals Clinical Leadership Fellow in the Office of Ambulatory Care. She will conduct her clinical practice at NYC Health + Hospitals/ Gouverneur. Prior to fellowship, Dr. Shen completed her internal medicine residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. During residency, she spearheaded several patient experience efforts, including projects to develop a patient-facing bias reporting tool and improve staff utilization of interpreter services. Dr. Shen served as the Co-Chair for the Asian American Pacific Islander Residency Committee. In 2019, she was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society and participated in a Global Health Fellowship in Uganda.

Dr. Shen earned her MD at Albert Einstein School of Medicine and received her BA in Biochemistry and Healthcare Management from Washington University in St. Louis.

Mubarak Akadri, MBBS, MPH

Mubarak Akadri, MBBS, MPH is a 2023-2024 NYC Health + Hospitals Clinical Leadership Fellow in the Office of Quality & Safety. He will conduct his clinical practice at NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings. Dr. Akadri completed his Internal medicine residency at the SUNY Downstate/Kings County Internal Medicine-Primary Care Program.

Dr. Akadri is interested in equitable care outcomes through improved patient care. During residency, he was elected to represent NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County at the Committee of Interns and Residents, and was named a 2020 COVID-19 Healthcare Hero by SUNY Downstate. Additionally, Dr. Akadri served in several leadership positions prior to residency, including as a Medical Director in the Army Mapping and Survey Directorate in Ogun State, Nigeria, where he provided medical services to active service members and continuous development opportunities to clinical staff. He also served as Medical Officer at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital in Nigeria.

Dr. Akadri completed his medical training at the University of Ilorin. He received his MPH at SUNY Downstate University of Health Sciences.

Anuj Rao, MD

Anuj Rao, MD is a 2023-2024 NYC Health + Hospitals Clinical Leadership Fellow in the Office of Population Health. He will conduct his clinical practice at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst.

Dr. Rao completed his internal medicine residency at New York University. Dr. Rao’s clinical and advocacy work has focused on patients with HIV, Hepatitis C, and other sexually transmitted infections. He is also a founding member of Advocacy for Immigrant Rights and Equity, and a volunteer physician with Make the Road & NY Docs. Dr. Rao was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Society.

Dr. Rao received his MD from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and his BA in Political Science from New York University College of Arts and Sciences. He also completed a Pre-Health Post-Baccalaureate Program from Hunter College in NY.

Taylor Lucas, MD

Lawrence “Taylor” Lucas, MD is a 2023-2024 NYC Health + Hospitals Clinical Leadership Fellow in the Office of Ambulatory Care. He will conduct his clinical practice at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan.

Dr. Lucas completed his internal medicine residency training at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Lucas has held numerous leadership positions in professional societies including as Medical Student Section National Chair of the American Medical Association and as Medical Student State Chair of the South Carolina Medical Association. His clinical, research and advocacy interests are focused on improving outcomes for diverse populations and addiction medicine.

Dr. Lucas received his MD from the University of South Carolina Greenville. He graduated with a BS in Biomedical Engineering from the University of South Carolina. He was inducted in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Society and received a leadership distinction award from the South Carolina Medical Association.
