Music for the Soul

A patient who was just discharged from surgery (and the family member who accompanied them) pulled me aside and stated they were having a very bad day until now. Hearing this music changed the course of their day

Scientific evidence suggests that music can have a profound effect on our health. Music reduces symptoms of depression, supports pain management, provides a safe environment to contribute to healing from trauma and builds resilience while decreasing anxiety and blood pressure. Music improves our sleep quality, mental alertness and memory. It elevates our spirit and advances our overall health and wellbeing.

Music for the Soul offers live concerts throughout the NYC Health + Hospital system. This program includes New York City based musicians that perform a variety of genres including Jazz, Classical, Folk, Hip Hop and Latin. Musicians are able to show their gratitude for our healthcare workers and also provide healing for patients and community members.

New in 2024 are the introduction of bedside experiences for patients and their families with musicians from a variety of musical backgrounds.

In addition to public concerts the Music for the Soul concerts also provide special events such as; Staff Appreciation Day, Hispanic/Latinx Heritage, Black History Month, Women’s History Month, National Nurses Month, Asian/Pacific Islander Month, Juneteenth and Pride Month. This list continues to grow as we learn the many needs of our communities.
